Yes the old town area is nicer to stay in well I thought so. we stayed about a 15 minutes walk from the Old Town but I just loved it there nice cafe's around the square to sit and people watch when your feet are killing you..lol
and everything is close by

what about Krakow in Poland. Plenty of sightseeing, 800 pubs for cheap drinks
You can fly to Krakow with ryanair from London Stansted Tues 8 Aug till Tues 15 Aug for the stupid price of £38.34 inc tax and charges +10KG hand luggage(checked in hold baggage extra dependant on how much you take, although at most if booked on line £5 return pp for 20KG each)
uk.Hotels.com have 3* Hotel City SM for £384 per room B+B (others available different prices)
