Paying bills with credit cards

Sorry if this is a silly question - have asked a few friends but no one seems to know.....is it possible to make mortgage repayments with your credit card and other direct debits? I have an Amex card, so try to spend as much as I can on it to get maximum cashback.
If I can use my credit card for all my bills - is there an easy way of doing it? If you change banks - they sort out all your DDs for you. Or do I have to contact all the different companies?
Thanks very much

You cannot pay majority of bills by a CC. The only exceptions I know are TV licence and (in some places) council tax.VKS wrote:Sorry if this is a silly question - have asked a few friends but no one seems to know.....is it possible to make mortgage repayments with your credit card and other direct debits? I can pay my Water rates (all in one go!) and BT bills by credit cards.
Can't get British Gas to accept them yet!
My Electricity is prepay cards and I get them from the local Spar shop which take credit cards so technically I suppose I pay my Electric bill with credit card too!0 -
grumbler wrote:Yes, you can, but this cost you extra £1 p.m., that negates all advantages of paying by a cashback credit card.
Why does it cost extra £1pm?
I just get quarterly bill and pay online.
Am I missing something here.0 -

The fact that you save £1 per month if you pay by Direct Debit.ejones999 wrote:Why does it cost extra £1pm?

Although if you had a monthly bill of over £200 you would be better off paying with a 0.5% cashback card!0 -

I think Grumbler is refering to the fact that if you pay by direct debit you get a reduction in your line rental of £1 per month0 -
Don't tell me that it was a credit card payment ... :rolleyes:barbie_babe wrote:i have payed mortgage over the phone .0 -
I pay mine and my parents mortgage, my student loans, day-to-day bit and bobs onto my credit card at no extrea costs. Only thing with the mortgage have to call up each month and remember to do it.
My parents have also caught on and now paying everything onto theirs too, Bt phone bill (at no extra costs), water bill, council tax bill, mortgage, day-to-day bits and bobs, mobile phone bill, the list is endless. (They would pay their gas and electric but it works out better by DD). All at no extra charge too!!! :j
NB. not sure if all companies allows credit card payments for mortgage as when I signed it did say in the contract that it should be paid via DD, but one day my parents got a letter through the post to say it can be paid via credit/debit card. so we cancel the DD and paid via CC. At first they were saying why dont you set up DD but now they're fine and just take the payments. :T0
