Cat with broken pelvis on cage rest

Hello all, my poor ginger cat was hit by a car this week whilst sunbathing in our own drive, very very upset I have no tears left, but to cut it short..

She has been at the vets and they are taking very good care of her she has a fractured pelvis, her legs are ok but she cant move, she is eating and drinking, but cant go to the loo herself vet doing it for her at the moment.

We went to see her last night and will tonight as well, gave her some of her own food and one of my husbands t-shirts to snuggle into.

They said hopefully she can come home tomorrow on cage rest, Im just wondering how we will deal with her going to the toilet, I havent spoken to vet yet but wondered if anyone else has had the same experience.

Yes my cat was also it by a car and had pelvis problems, he also had to have his tail amputated. He couldnt go to the toilet by himself for ages. We needed to physically squeeze his bladder for him. It wasnt too bad, the vet showed us how to do it. At first we took him back once a day and the vet did it for us but he was only a few doors down so it wasnt too much of a problem. He knew we were trying to help him and as time went on you could tell he was helping by giving a little push aswell. He never quite got back to normal. He never had any control over his bowels so was kept on a dry diet for the rest of his life and occassionally but not always he'd wee in his sleep. Poor little guy lived for ages though and died of cancer last year.

    RIP Charlie cat

Pickle - thank you so much for your detailed answer, Toby is 13 already we rescused her a few years ago and she has been a great comfort to me during this time, its silly but I honestly cant imagine life without her, after always having dogs I never thought I could love a cat so much.

Will wait and see the vet tonight, at least I know we can help her with the toilet if needs be, I just dont want her to suffer x

My cat was also run over and broke his pelvis. He could wee ok but had trouble doing the other. I had to dose him with liquid parafin for ages. He was caged for 2 months I think. He has had carious problems since but his pelvis and toilet have been fine. It felt cruel to keep him caged and he used to escape but you must persist with it.

Good luck. Wishing your cat well from afar

Thank you soo much, the vet said to pop in after work and see what we can do, but she is 13 i just dont want to cause any unnecessary stress to her. My boss an animal lover has been very good at work, said i could go home but id rather be here.. I just dont know what to do, will the vet advise if he thinks she needs to go to sleep? x

Awww no, poor little lass ... when I took my first cat in (stray) it was found that she had had a broken pelvis and it really affected her mobility. She just couldn't get around easy enough to get out of harms way so she ended up being a house cat so I really identify with you and your little girl.

Am only onto my second cat (another rescue) so am no expert, but a friend told me that cats can hide their injuries very well so this clot could be something that was happening straight after the accident and has just been picked up on now.

Thank goodness she is in the right place to be treated straightaway though! That's one good thing ....

To be honest, when I used to work at the vets we preferred it if the owners just popped in at certain times to visit with their pets who had to be kept in ... it takes a lot to look after the needs of a pet on crate rest, to keep them clean and keep up with the medications so we appreciated owners who came in when we had done all that was necessary and then they could just have time with their pet when everything had been done for them.

Am certainly not saying don't visit, don't get me wrong - (I firmly believe a pet kept in at the vets will come on better if it sees its owners, then it knows it hasn't been abandoned and doesn't just give up!) ... but for now, they are probably running all manner of tests, seeing what's what, so will appreciate you going afterwards rather than straightaway.

How lovely of your boss to say that though ... *S* .. not many bosses would!

Just know we are thinking of you and your little cat ... my Holly went on for years after her pelvic break so fingers crossed they can get on top of this other problem now for yours ... keep strong and keep positive ... xxxx

Btw, if it doesn't look so good, don't be afraid to ask you vet outright what he or she thinks re pts ... at the end of the day it is your decision but you need to know as much info as you can to be able to make that decision but let's hope it isn't anywhere near that stage yet ...
