No, not moving there but things may happen that mean a holiday is out of the question. Mind you as a career change there are worst options!

Wear shades. See the world. Meet loads of interesting people. Then shoot them... ;)
Confession time... I put my gas/electric figs in the other day and the electricity has gone up a wee bit since this time last year, so not having a sooper dooper gadget that works stuff out I decided to read the meter again the next day...I was so upset that I'd used a ridiculous amount of energy that I was lecturing DS and turning even more stuff off... turns out I had calculated using the gas reading...whoops:rotfl::rotfl:!

    Oh dear...
so we've only used about 11kW over two days despite lots of washing and DS on PS3 for most of the day.... still we can and will do better but it's much better than the 30 I thought we'd used in one day:eek:!

Well 11KWh is about a one bar electric fire on for 11 hours, or a 100W light bulb (aka The Light Bulb of Satan) on for just over 4 days.
Was talking to my wee bro at christmas - he's moving house and getting a bigger mortgage but told me he's planning to over pay to cut down the interest paid back... he was explaining it as a new concept :rotfl:- didn't like to burst his bubble but maybe I should direct him here?

With what you get up to..?:eek::eek:

    ;):p
still at least he's got his head screwed on!

But it hasn't been screwed on as long as his sister's...

If that's a euphemism for "quiet" - then it certainly was that. I will probably do something different next time.

    Used every day?

It depends what you mean by "last".

The battery should last about 3 or so years before dropping to 50% of its starting "lifespan".

The hard disk has about a 40% chance of developing bad sectors/failing in 3 years. If it is, then you can just replace and reinstall. You may have to go through the Microsoft secure Advantage licensing bollox, but that just one of life's tribulations. Like piles.

How long Windows lasts on a working hard disk before it dies is a matter of luck and wind direction. Reinstallation cures that though.

Keyboard should last until you spill something into it. Everything else is just a matter of luck.

Just as a starting point, this laptop I'm typing into was installed in Oct 2004.

    Why do you ask?

Well first of all - do you defragment?

In the old days (everyone, turn your screen to sepia), defragmentation tools used to defragment. Now the Microsoft tools just "sort a little". You will need to run windows defragmenter at least 6 times to get something approaching what the old tools used to do.

Second of all. locate where your laptop draws air in for cooling, and where it expels it. Put your lips against the in-vent to seal it and blow.

    Blow like it's Johnny Depp!

A large cloud of dust should emerge.

Next, do the same to the exhaust vent, so you're blowing against the flow.

    Blow like it's George Clooney!

Again, you should get a cloud of dust coming out. It shouldn't overhead so much now.

Another question! I've seen lots of folk saying they turn off everything at night apart from fridge freezer & router. So why leave the router on? Anyone?

The bit at the exchange (DSLAM for those who like acryonyms) works with the router to "learn" the frequency profile of your line in order to cram the best out of it. Turning it off causes your router to forget and so go back to the training mode - or at least it used to.
