Wharfedale Freeview box - not working (ticking noise)

Options
Hi, I have a Wharfedale WLFP1000 freeview box and since moving house it no longer works, no light coming on to indicate power and I can hear a ticking sound coming from it. Had it less than 1 year so really dont want to get a new one. There is a chance I accidentally plugged the wrong power adapter into the device with a greater watt than it needed if this could be a reason?

any advice welcome. thanks

A transformer of greater wattage won't hurt it, only greater voltage would/might, or reversed polarity.

    Is it still under warranty?

no, i dont think it came with warranty as I think it was from ebay.
  • Serious post.

If you have plugged the wrong power adapter in then you could well have reversed the polarity or input the wrong voltage. Boxes like the wharfedale are built to a low cost so don't have anything like reverse polarity protection. I'm assuming this is not a freeview recorder so the ticking sound could only be a relay of some description. In any case it doesn't sound good so you may have to accept that it's knackered and see if you can find another bargain on ebay. Look for an old Pace box, they are pretty good quality and pretty cheap.

thanks that makes sense, im thinking maybe spending a bit more might give a more reliable box and my research online suggests most people seem to agree that the Sony VTX D800U box is good, any thoughts?

    thanks

It is a good box but if buying second hand youy need to make sure it has the latest software downloaded and installed. Otherwise there's a problem with the EPG
