As its been said, some cars are designed to be run on the higher octane fuel, so there would be very little difference in any other car.

My car is designed to use super unleaded, its specified in the owners manual, although it does say that it can be run on the normal petrol, but I've found that the car doesnt run smoothly and can be quite jumpy without the super unleaded.

very true, it will depend on the engine...i would imagine that older diesels wouldn't show much difference with the V Power stuff

Make sure you are using the Shell Points card if you buy it .

you need 150 litres in a Quarter to be " invited " to join the V-Power club , which seems to give you more rewards than the standard club ect.

I have started to fill up on this stuff since i got my Honda Civic DOHC VTEC which requires super unleaded.
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

All petrol cars sold in the EU since about 1998 have been required to be able to run on 95RON.
As said before, it depends whether the car was designed to be able to take it as to whether it makes a difference in performance or economy. High performance cars and alot of performance Jap imports (Japan has 101RON petrol at the pumps) are designed to use super unleaded and so benefit. Most everyday euro stuff won't see any worthwhile gain.
You can't tell anything on the basis of engine size either, as was suggested, as it all depends on the set up of the engine management system.

Best bet would be to say what car you have and someone will know whether it will make a difference. Although I could tell you about the technicalities of how it works if you like?

Most modern cars these days with their computer controlled engines and with respect to this subject, ignition timing, can automatically adjust ignition timing to run with anything from 95 RON (in many cases less) up to 98 RON. So even my wifes 2003 Mazda 6 2.0 petrol can take advantage of up to 98 RON fuel.

On petrol cars I've never been able to measure an improvement, but I do consistently measure an MPG improvement in the 5% to 7% range with premium diesel fuels, so 6p per litre extra is about the break even point. Engine runs a bit smoother and may be a touch quicker but it's hard to tell.

All I have is a 2006 Fiesta Zetec 1.4. I'm not expecting to see my car suddenly do 0-60 in 5.5s, but you know what I mean. If I could get 50mpg instead of 45, then surely it's worth it?

Popular motoring TV shows discussed and tested it over and over again.

The verdict, unless you are driving a high performance sports car (on race track) it is not worth filling with.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

It's certainly worth trying for a couple of tanks to see if you notice a difference and if it's worth it to you.

My father has a 1990 BMW and he finds it makes his engine much quieter, but he isn't willing to pay extra for that!

    It would be except that:

If the increase in MPG offset the extra cost, then all other garages would be out of business as everyone queued around the block for Shell's 'wonder fuel'.

I get Shell Diesel Plus whatever that is, only because is 1.01p and cheaper than everywhere else around here which wants 1.05p!

I feel better putting shell in my tank than tesco after the fuelgate scandal last year! plus its supposed to clean my injectors to boot :money: and at 1.01p I can't complain :T
