Just to follow up, I think I may be sorted now. For any other parents out there, you need a MED 5 medical certificate(pink) not a MED 3 (white) as the former can be backdated by the GP. I had to visit my son's GP when collecting him from college, to get the right one. My son is 20 in full time education doing a life skills course, and the lady at the ESA department said he should qualify for ESA youth.

In NI the Med5 is white with green lettering and the Med3 is a light yellow with black lettering. Same functions wherever though:T
