my daughter is 17, she attends school full time Special needs school. she has recently claimed ESA in youth ...we were asked to provide a sick note from GP for the 6 months before we applied..this was then sent off to ESA people....medical form was sent here i filled it out on her behalf and sent off again...the medical form asked lots of questions about my daughters ability etc and what she could do , i recieved a letter 4 DAYS LATER to say that she had been put straight in to the SUPPORT GROUP and would not need to attend an interview etc.....her money of £108.00 a week would start beg of August which is 14 weeks form the date we applied for her (May 5th )
    Hope this helps.

Its good to hear what is, relatively speaking, a success story.

yes, it was in a way a success stority in that it was agreed so quickly....but sad that she will never be able to work....
does anyone know what is the age limit for applying for this, my other daughter also has the same profound disabiltiy as my 17 year old and is 16 in Ocotober ,is she able to claim ESA in youth the day after her 16th birthday.

If she is in FTE when she turns 16 then she will not be entitled at that point. Once FTE finishes then there is potential to be entitled to ESA(Y).

am confused ESA....my 17 year old is in full time educaton and gets ESA was told that as its special education there is an exemption that allows it to be claimed when in full time education. social services benefits officer told me this was true..but forgot to ask if it can be claimed day after 16 or was it the school year of the 17th birthday.

The young person must not be in full time education of 21+ hours a week
    – but special education can be ignored

just taken this off the ESA site....hth

Reading the guidance on the subject its going to be decided on a case by case basis. It does seem to be possible to be entitled from 16 onwards. The make-up of the special education seems to be the determining factor.

Thanks ESA ...both my girls attend a special needs school are in the post 14 unit .the school is for severe and profund learning disabilites so i case the make up of the unit is the determining factor.

Just to follow up, I think I may be sorted now. For any other parents out there, you need a MED 5 medical certificate(pink) not a MED 3 (white) as the former can be backdated by the GP. I had to visit my son's GP when collecting him from college, to get the right one. My son is 20 in full time education doing a life skills course, and the lady at the ESA department said he should qualify for ESA youth.
My two sons & I all have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
