Huge problems with Pipex - wanna cancel but can't!?!?

I have just moved home and am having big problems with my internet service.
Before I moved, I had been with a certain firm for about 3 years - not the cheapest but no technical problems and no need to find out if their customer service was any good.
On moving home, I called the "moving home" section to arrange disconnection at the old address and connection at the new one (had to get a new number as I moved dialling code areas).
The operator said it could take a week to set up phone calls and two weeks to set up internet access and that cos I was moving home they had to start a new 12-month contract (and like I sucker, I said OK, thinking that I'd had no problems in the past.
I rang 10 days later and was told that the phone was connected and the net would be hooked up the following day. It wasn't, and I received a letter welcoming me to the firm (eh?) and saying my new modem was on the way. This letter also included my new username - but no password.
So I rang them up again - was given the password and told to go with the letter.
Last Monday, the day after the "connection date", I was finally able to log on. FOR THREE DAYS.
Then the connection collapsed, and despite several calls and speaking to different departments and changing my phone extension cable and switching microfilters, the DSL light on my modem is still flashing on and off and I have no internet service.
Apparently, tech support can find no problem with my connection but I am convinced there's no problem with the hardware or connections as it's exactly how it was at the old house and when the service worked for three days at this.
The customer service has been worse than useless and all I want to do is cancel.
But with a 12-month contract apparently having been started, that would cost me £180.
Any suggestions?
