extra car hire insurance policy?

I have noticed that most do CDW policies as standard. Can I get a separate policy to cover total loss. I have read nightmare reports about car hire problems and massive excess charges, especially in Spain.
I did get a good rate for my car hire but I'm worried that only having CDW is not going to be enough.

We've got a local company in Cala Millor (Mallorca) through Lastminute.com. The prices were very good after searching for weeks. I also went through Quidco and it validated straight away. (8% at the time)

I realise they are a broker but we have contacted the company direct since to confirm details.
