Sorry about the chickens Lynda, it seems really cruel of the other person. Keep on dreading getting a similar phone call about the allotment I've applied for (although I realise chickens and allotments aren't quite the same). Want to get a book about allotment growing with some vouchers I have but I feel as soon as I get something they'll say that the allotments weren't feasible or were oversubscribed or something sillier and then I'll be left with a book I can't put to much use (and a load of destroyed plans).

  • Oh well, been cheering myself up about the lack of chickens with a bit of retail therapy - not that I've bought anything yet. I'm allowed to do wedding shopping so that's OK. There's an Amazon seller who is offering a hair comb that looks pretty, but I'd need 4 (1 for each bridesmaid) and in a different colour, so I've sent a message to see if they can do different ones. I've only got £4 left for bridesmaid outfits according to the budgets, but I've also got £20 in my Amazon account from surveys, so that should cover it... They are much cheaper on ebay, but I've not seen ones that I like as much. My hair fascinator cost £1 from Matalan a few weeks ago, but they only had 1!

I'm on a course about plastic conservation in London for another 2 days (had a interesting session today). Anyone know any decent places to eat around Kings Cross? My meal tonight wasn't all that great....

Hope the allotment works out for you Vixstar!

  • Re: homemade sanitary towels, that's definitely an area I wouldn't compromise, especially as it only cost me £1.20 a month bying ownbrand from MrT.

No compromise involved - cotton is far, far more comfortable than disposable pads. I bet you'd choose a pair of cotton underpants over a pair of disposable paper ones ;-)
  • Had a frugal shopping trip this evening - managed to get a huge tub of little strawberries for 10p and teacakes for 15p in A5DA, then found some black stockings (which I would have paid about £3 in other shops) for 99p in L1DL and then after quailing at the price of plant pots in Focu5 (and wondering if I could just find a discarded plastic pot the size I needed in) I spotted a cereamic pot, suitable plastic pot and (very dead) plant for the grand sum of 50p. Was very tempted to buy more of them at that price but couldn't think what to use them for and din't want to have them just knocking around at home - probably a mistake but hey ho.

    Hi all,

Went for the open day at university yesterday and...I really liked it! :D The bar is amazing, they have converted part of the church and it is all full of leather Chesterfield's, pinball machines etc. Now I have to apply through UCAS and get an interview so will get that done asap. The main thing is sorting out all my stuff - I have to slim it all down by about 90% _pale_

Good job I am trying to live on 4k a year this year though, as that is pretty much all I would get next year (unless I work during term time, which I don't want to do). However, it is catered halls, so really only my car and social life to run.

Now, back to reality. Back to work again today, so making packed lunch etc.

Lynda - Sorry you did not get any chickens. I am sure you will find some soon

    Hope everyone is well

    Hi everyone :)
Want to get a book about allotment growing with some vouchers I have but I feel as soon as I get something they'll say that the allotments weren't feasible or were oversubscribed or something sillier and then I'll be left with a book I can't put to much use (and a load of destroyed plans).

May I suggest Grow Your Own Veg by Carol Klein? I've found it really useful, although I didn't know my libary had it when i bought it!

I'm doing the storecupboard challegne to use what I've got instead of buying extra's this month. Lots of courgettes and tomatoes to use :)

I've also got chard growing - any tips on eating?
