  • I question whether someone wanting to find out where they can get this game for cheap should be subjected to moralistic ranting, I mean, it isn't really that difficult to open a new thread. But in true moralistic style, I shall be a hyprocrite and have my own say.

In my opinion it is not the games that mess the kids up. It's the lack of persepctive of the real world that their parents have failed to install in them. Yeah we get high school shootings, yeah there are children that murder other children, but just how many children are there who play these sort of computer games? If these games were so bad, surely our schools would be more akin to being on the frontline in Afghanistan.

We are guided by morals that have been built up by generations and generations of social interaction. Who teaches you your morals? Your parents initially, then your own experinces. If the parents havent nurtured that grounding sense of right and wrong in a chld it is the fault of the parents that subsequently in life a child might go out and become overly influenced by an external source. It is impossible to shield a child forever. If you ask a normal child why he doesn't go out and re-enact Modern Warfare 2, Resident Evil or Super Mario for that matter, I am sure that you would get the following repsonse. 'Because its wrong.' Or even 'Because its a computer game'.

How many of the millions and millions that play on guitar hero go out and learn to play the guitar? How many who play Wii tennis go out and learn to play tennis? How many kids that play FIFA 10 are actually fat and !!!!!! at football? How many children who play Modern Warfare go out and shoot people?

Yeah we end at the same point, we blame the parents, but we shouldnt blame them for buying the game, the market is manufactured to be addictive. Thats generally too, adults are as easily influenced as kids when it comes to peer pressure. What we really should be blaming them for failure to have brought up a decent well adjusted child in the first place. A child that understands what is right and what is wrong. A child that realises that killing is bad. A child that at the end of the day can turn his console off and go to bed knowing that it is just a game.

The BBFC website says the following:-

    The ‘18’ Category

What does the ‘18’ symbol mean?

No-one under 18 is allowed to see an ‘18’ film at the cinema or buy/rent an ‘18’ rated DVD or video game. No ‘18’ rated works are suitable for children.
Is an ‘18’ certificate on a video game the same as an ‘18’ for a film or DVD?

Yes, if a video game is rated ‘18’ it contains strong material and is not suitable for players who are under 18.
What sort of issues might I find in an ’18’, film, DVD or video game?

‘18’ works are for adults and can contain strong issues such as:
    • very strong violence
    • frequent strong language (eg 'f***') and/or very strong language (eg ‘c***’)
    • strong portrayals of sexual activity
    • scenes of sexual violence
    • strong horror
    • strong blood and gore
    • discriminatory language and behaviour

An ‘18’ work could also contain depictions of real sex if it is justified by context. For more detailed information on the ‘18’ category click here to read the BBFC guidelines.

Can you see drugs in an '18'?

At ‘18’ drug taking may be shown but the work as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse.
If adults can watch what they want, what might be cut from an ‘18’ work?

Cuts are occasionally made to ‘18’ films, DVDs and video games. Intervention is most likely in the following areas:

    • where the material is in breach of the criminal law, or has been created through the commission of a criminal offence
    • where material or treatment appears to the BBFC to risk harm to individuals or, through their behaviour, to society – for example, any detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts, or of illegal drug use, which may cause harm to public health or morals. This may include portrayals of sexual or sexualised violence which might, for example, eroticise or endorse sexual assault
    • where there are more explicit images of sexual activity which cannot be justified by context. Such images may be appropriate in ‘R18’ works and, in “sex works” (see below), would normally be confined to that category.

In the case of video works (including video games), which may be more accessible to younger viewers, intervention may be more frequent than for cinema films.

How can I find out more?

In order to provide adults with more information about a work, the BBFC produces 'Consumer Advice' for each film. This is a line of additional information that explains why the film received its certificate. The Consumer Advice appears on posters, in TV advertisements and alongside the billings in local newspapers. It is also available on the main BBFC website. For further information about Consumer Advice, click here.
For video games classified ‘18’ further information for parents is available on this website. A games search will provide comprehensive information on exactly why a film, DVD or game has been given a particular category. All the issues are discussed in detail and parents can use this information to make informed decisions when choosing viewing material for their children.

    And this

    Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

    Role-playing game / Shoot-'em-up

    Released:
    Nov 2009
    Consoles:
    PlayStation 3 / Windows / Xbox 360

    Consumer Advice
    Contains strong bloody violence

    Summary
Following on from Modern Warfare 1, and containing some of the same characters, Modern Warfare 2 sees an alliance of Western Special Operations forces attempt to thwart a plan to start WW3.

    Extended Consumer Advice
This game is a combat simulation for the Xbox 360 console in which the player takes the role of various members of a special operations team. The game was passed at '18' for strong bloody violence.
The player takes part in gun battles with various enemies and an array of weapons - automatic rifles, pistols and grenades. Larger items of artillery and tanks are also available, as are bladed weapons for stealth attacks and hand-to-hand combat. The battles are intense and conducted from a first-person perspective. Blood splashes are seen with further sight of blood decorating the various environments in the aftermath of fighting.
In particular the '18' category was awarded for a mission in which the player has infiltrated the terrorist group and joins them as they attack civilians at an airport. The violence is bloody and intense, and aggravated by the fact that, unlike other combat sequences in the game, the civilians cannot fight back. The player character can choose to join in the shooting or do nothing in order to preserve his cover, but he cannot intervene to prevent the massacre by shooting the terrorists since he is then 'discovered' and is very quickly overwhelmed and killed. The brutality in this mission, along with the disturbing nature of the scenario it sets up, was suitable for the adult category only. The content of this mission was recognized as having the potential to offend. However the game gives the player the option to skip this mission without penalties to progress or achievements.
There is moderate language with uses of 'sh*t', 'b*llocks', '*ss', 'wh*re' and 'b*tch'.
No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an '18' rated game.

  • Seriously! Can we please get back to topic?!
25 pages of completely irrelevant !!!!!ing !!!!!. As MANY people have said, this is not the place for moral discussions, start a different thread.

    In the interests of pushing this back on track;
media-pricer website is a good way of tracking the price of the game. You can either be notified whenever the price drops or when it drops below a certain price.
Already discovered that Amazon dropped from around £40 to £32 again this morning.
Still hunting for a sub-£30 online bargain!

My posting wasn't part of any moral discussion.

Someone asked whether the game was suitable for a 12 year old.

I think you'll find the recent responses are a result of a direct question by a poster asking for advice. They do not cover 25 pages, more like 2-3, interspersed with other posts. I think some responses have been well over the top on both sides of the argument. Of course not all who are exposed to such things will turn out to be violent individuals in adult life, any more than children who are not given these games are kept in an oppressed bubble who will feel the need to rebel when they reach adulthood. I reserve the right to bring up my children as I see fit.

As for an online bargain under £30, you'll be lucky. Morrisons offer (not online) has finished. Sainsbury's offer of £26 online has sold out..I suspect that will be finishing any moment too. If you're very lucky, you might find it available in store.

Amazon reduced their price to £32 last night, but it has been changing regularly..nothing less than £32 though. You may also be able to order it from Tesco Direct for £32, with a 4-6 week wait for delivery.

That I think, sums up the thread.

  • Maybe you'd like to try 'mothering' your children for once. Yes what a novel idea. But lets just leave it to social services and the police to pick up the pieces shall we.

Hey Tardedmother he's finished all the missions already, just keeping a close eye on him now in case he's off down the local city finding a gun dealer and trying to shoot peoples heads off!!!!! you are so judgemental but i can guarantee that my kids are far more polite, well behaved and academically ahead than any child you care to breed. And more to the point I couldn't care less what you think as you are nobody to me.
