Bank Error in my favour, what should I do?!

Hi there, I made a cash deposit into my bank account
(it's a big bank). I've told the cashier twice the
amount of deposit I would like to make.
He counted the money and put £100.00 too much into
my account - I noticed this at home.
£100.00 extra are always welcome - but I feel bad
about it and thinking of telling them.
What would you do in my situation?
Do you know whether the cashier will be penalised?

it'll probably get picked up later and rectified - just leave it and eventually someone will pick up on the fact (maybe?)......
Cashier won't get in trouble but banks rarely lose £100 so when they see their till is down it'll be found and then reflected in your balance..... I wouldn;t ring and tell them, they won't be able to do much and it'd cost you for the call.... just don;t spend it and eventually it will be reclaimed but if you can earn 20p interest it's better than nothing!2010 - year of the troll

I would ring if its not too much trouble working in a bank its frustrating for the cashier concerned because they may spend hours looking for the difference and still not find it and if they have too many differences then they will probably get a disiplinary(sp).0

My bank made an error when I was paying in at the machine - only £10 - I told them at the time and they noted it, I told them again a couple of weeks later, this was a good 8 months ago now and my account has still not been rectified!!0

You wouldn't get a disciplinary at all - not unless it was a regular occurrence! There are such things as employment laws protecting employees from such misdemeanour's!.... mistakes can and inevitably do happen.
If the cashier in question was not so complacent then the transaction would have been correct - remember the OP did state that he advised them several times of the amount! Obviously hearing was the cashiers pitfall...... ?
The OP shouldn't ring, why should he have to pay to get messed about? Chances are they won't have a clue what he's on about in the CC anyway!2010 - year of the troll

Yea, sometimes you get away with it - but so long as you reported it to them then you've done your bit - its not for you to run their governance dept is it? lol2010 - year of the troll

I wouldn't ring them, I would just wait and see what happens.
If your bank is like mine, you will probably get through to someone in India who will not know what you are talking about anyway, and your bank will no doubt have an 0845 number or similar.
Perhaps drop some hearing aid batteries on the counter on your next visit to your bank.. :rotfl:0 -
Thanks for your replies so far!
I gather from your replies that the cashier won't be penalised but the bank will find out the mistake sooner or later and will essentially track back to me.
To save them the extra work I could just let them know...
Although I was quited annoyed with their service a while ago...0 -
I wouldn't worry about the cashier, if he/she can't count, they are in the wrong job anyway...
Personally, as said earlier I wouldn't do anything at all.0 -

The problem for an employer with these sort of errors is that the employee is either dishonest or incomepetent, so appropriate documentation relating to the errors they make can and will be used, eventually, assuming repeated errors occur, to get rid of the staff member.0 -
How would the bank ever know which account was overcredited? I understand in a small branch / one where most people pay in using slips that it's easy, but what about a busy city branch where lots of people just come in with their debit card and stack of cash - whose account balance should be reduced?0
