There is a list of which banks using Visa debit cards charge on the Travel Money Maximiser here...
Pay on a Switch card and there's no charge, yet if you pay for foreign currency on a credit card, or some bank’s Visa debit cards, it’s possible you’ll be charged an additional fee on top of what you pay the bureau de change. If possible avoid using the cards that charge and pay another way instead.- Credit cards. All credit cards charge when you buy foreign currency, as this is treated as if you are withdrawing cash from an ATM, plus you could be charged interest from the day you make the purchase, even if you repay it in full at the end of the month. See a full table of these charges
- Visa Debit cards. If you have a Visa Debit card (these used to be known as Delta), whether you’re charged depends on your bank, it will usually be around 2.5% with a minimum of £3.
- Debit cards that DO charge a fee Abbey, Alliance & Leicester, Barclays, Cahoot, Co-op, Lloyds, Smile
Debit cards that DON'T charge a fee
Coventry BS, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Co-op, Intelligent Finance, Nationwide Natwest, RBS
0 - Credit cards. All credit cards charge when you buy foreign currency, as this is treated as if you are withdrawing cash from an ATM, plus you could be charged interest from the day you make the purchase, even if you repay it in full at the end of the month. See a full table of these charges

Visa have deferred increasing the rate to 1% from July and so Nationwide are are holding the rate at 0.84%
That is not going to make that much difference that 0.16%.. At least not to me.
Going from 0 to 0.84% is however.
Not that I am moaning as it is still better then my OH's NatWest card charge!!:eek:0 -
before going on holiday last week, i decided to purchase my euros online from the post office as they would deliver to the branch up the road, a fantastic service... however, i paid for it using my halifax one credit card as i do with all online purchases.
when i went to pay off the £600 pound charge from the post office (correct balance), there was a seperate item on my statement for £18.22 for a "CASH ADVANCE FEE". i contacted halifax, who said it was NOTHING to do with them and to contact the post office.
the post office inevitably said that it was halifax....
back to the halifax and they then said it WAS them and they were charging me 3% for the money because they see it the same as getting money out of an ATM, not an online purchase.
i said to the operator will he remove it, to which he replied no, so i asked to speak to some one who could remove it and he told me that there was no-one else who could help and that was tough and he would send me the T&Cs...
i then said (still being polite) that if i closed my current account, isa, regular saver AND credit card.. them would they re-emburse me...
the answer i got was no!!
i know its only £18 but its the principle and after a quick look on the website i cant fine where it clearly states this charge.
has anyone else had this problem and got their money back or is it a case of tough luck???
I cannot see the complaint here.
Whether you went to an ATm or got the cash on line, it is still a cash advance.0
