If I take my mobile abroad but after a few days set call divert to a UK number -
o2 say I will pay roaming costs for incoming calls then forwarding costs back to UK , ( taotalling about £2.50 per min ) but if I set it before I go ( and leave phone in UK) then the cost is just teh minutres from my inclusive package

Does this sound right, ( ie they know i'm abroad) or is it just a load of C/s rubbish ??

It sounds odd to me. I've just checked my unbilled calls from the other day, and there are no roaming costs but I can't quite remember when I set up the call divert, whether it was on the way in or out of the Channel Tunnel. I think the explanation you've got may be something about answerphone. I'd ring to ask myself, but I left the phone at work ...

Well, if it's diverted for calls, no reason not to take it with you for texts, both send and receive, as sending while roaming uses up the inclusive ones at 4 for 1

Perfer to get texts / gprs on this phone but divert calls ( or leave message to do so)

so actually leaving a message seems best option ( silly its would cost so much to divert , whether phone is ) - thanks anyway

If i go abroad i get them to turn off the voicemail all together, I refuse to pay the roaming rates, they're ridiculous price, you pay about 80p for someone else to leave a message, you then pay the same again to listen to it.
I only send messages when abroad or use a phonecard in a callbox to phone back to the UK.

Whenever I've roamed abroad I've not been charged to set-up/cancel diverts, when I've used the phone menus.

the way to get around the changes is either to "cancel all diverts" and then you only pay to answer it (I've found that caller ID normally works ). So if it's someone you don't want to speak to, don't answer it and no charge.

The other low cost is "divert all calls" to a British number using the phones menu, the call will not leave the UK and you'll pay for a normal UK divert or in the case of the voicemail, its free for messages to be left for you (You'd only pay to retrieve the messages).

For 02, try diverting all calls to 901 via the phone menu and see if it works, just now. If it works now, then it would normally work when roaming too. you'll see a n arrow of some kind to indicate that all call are being diverted.

No need to pay roaming rates. Part of the reason for this discussion could be diversion to another SIM with free incoming calls. And a foreign SIM can be used for reasonably priced calls around 10p to 20p per minute, some less.
