OP - how about driving through red lights to allow an emergency vehicle to pass? What do you think?

Well there is no point in creating another need for emergency vehicles!

Also maybe your attention should have been on the roads rather than what others were doing or not doing

If that comment is directed at me then you should know that I was on foot. On the pavement - not in the middle of the road.

There are too many people like this on the roads, i'm usually a passenger in a car at rush hour and the number of times people don't move over is unbelivable....i end up shouting at them in frustration (the same reaction if i see a motorists talking on a mobile).
Using my phone to post - apologies in advance for any typos

    1) Often police cars dont use sirens other than at junctions thus motorists might not notice it immediately

    2) There is no legal obligation to pull over. In fact the official line is you shouldnt do anything and they will get past you and that you should only do something if its safe. maybe these motorists didnt feel it was safe to pull over/brake suddenly

    3) Police cars don't have any right to break laws etc

    4) Stereos sound it out.

Its more likely the cops were rushing to get some reduced price donuts at tesco than to an emergency.

Also maybe your attention should have been on the roads rather than what others were doing or not doing
Hopefully these rules will apply when you are in a serious road accident that requires IMMEDIATE attention, lets face it, it would be one less moron to have to deal with on the roads.

I would advise you to re-take your theory, I think you will be surprised at just how wrong you are on the subject.

The only problem with 120watt CD/MP3/radio eight speaker sound systems thoughtfully provided by so many manufacturers in so many motor cars nowadays is that, unbelievably, people will switch 'em on. And so if they're insulated (deafened) by in-car entertainment, no way are they going to hear any siren at all. The solution may be to equip emergency vehicles with battering rams and to institute a system of Court fines for driving without due care and attention where the lowest applies to those listening to Radio 3 and the highest, listening to Jonathan Ross.

wow! do these sound systems block off rear view mirrors too?

That is annoying (I've even seen the aftermath of when some cretin braked to have a good look at the accident on the other carriageway). I've seen minimum speed signs in the highway code (but never on the road oddly enough) the Police should just put an appropriate one up and send a ticket to anyone going too slow.
