I know I need a BT line to get the O2 broadband, but do I need to be paying BT for it? Or are there alternative companies that provide a BT line that I can pay for the line rental? Sorry if this is a silly question!

Their are a fair few suppliers that will supply a line many of which are BT compatible, however if you dont pay your line rental to BT you want have a BT Line proper.
O2 say Home Broadband subject to availability, BT Line, direct debit* and min term contract.
Give them a call and see if they will accept a BT compatible line and then your be able to choose from a number of suppliers eg Post Office Homephone.0 -
"BT Line" simply means a fixed line on what was the Post Office telephone system - it is a generic term to differentiate between fixed lines and cable lines. IIRC who you pay your line rental to is irrelevant, the line is still physically connected to the same exchange as when you were with BT and the same providers should be available. I have seen posts where customers who pay Sky or Post Office for their line rental have switched to o2 Broadband with no issues at all.0

True but some ISP,s do make it clearer by saying a BT compatible line.0 -
I understood that some broadband suppliers still insisted you had a line billed by BT.0
