Virgin Router

Does anyone else here have the standard Virgin wi-fi router and find it to be pathetic?
I live on the ground floor of an oldish house and the signal will not stretch from one end of the house to the other.
We have no alternative but to have the router in the front room and my Xbox will not pick up the signal.
I initially threatened to leave Virgin Media within the introductory period and one of the reasons I gave was the poor quality of the internet. They convinced me to stay by saying BT is worse.
I am now at the end of my tether and have complained. They are going to send me a different router.
What are my options if this new one is as bad? Can I cancel the contract as I made an issue aware to them within my initial period and that issue was not resolved?
I also notice that there is a stronger router for more expensive plans. What would be the chances on getting one of those on the lower price plan without having to pay for it.
Thanks for any help in advance!
