There’s no need to fork out all that money on av software and then pay the additional costs for subscriptions. Free AV software like avira and AVG do a good job, I use avira and I’ve had no problems with it. Just remember to turn off the nag screens (via regedit) and you won’t have the popup. I would never ever install Norton or Symantec though, just bloatware and they offer no better antivirus protection than the free ones.

I’ve started testing MS security essentials on one of my machines and it’s looking like I’ll be using this as my main av software soon. It’s free, lightweight (small hd and memory footprint), fast and has protection from virus (both realtime and on demand), spyware (via the windows defender engine), Trojans and rootkits. Once this hits the market I don’t think there will be any need to use any other av software. If you haven’t already check it out.

Here’s a quick review of the first tests.

No, Norton is quite possibly the worst.
Actually i'd disagree and say its one of the best - it's definately one of the leanest (which seems odd I know) in it's newest 2009 incarnation.

I've decided to stick with Norton, as I've used it for a year and seems to be doing a good enough job for me. I've just been lookin on Ebay for Norton 360 - is 3.0 the newest version? Some of the sellers email you the activation key, does this sound ok or a bit dodgy? I thought I'd need a disc as this was how I first put Norton onto my laptop???

360 v3.0 is the latest version using the 2009 engine (so runs suprisingly well).

If you download the trial from the internet (you can get it from the symantec website) you can then use it for 30 days, then just type the code in at the end of the 30 days (you can do it earlier - but why not save some money? :P).

Except it uses more RAM and doesn't have any Firewall protection in it.
