also dare i say it, a lot depends on browser and browsing habits

The nagscreen can be removed but you shouldn't have to fight with your AV.

It doesen't matter about browsing habits really - any site can be infected if unprotected.

I've found Avast and AVG only remove the executable part of the virus and leave all the crap behind (e.g. you just get re-infected on reboot or you're still infected)

You'll find most people say use Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware and SAS with free AV's because that's how unreliable they can be. Avira probs the exception.

That was a hijacked site (not !!!!!!) and it's in IE... I don't think it matters about browser or browsing habbits. IE is secure with UAC in vista and 7

Wow thats some cheap antivirus! Is it really better than Norton? I thought Norton was the best, thats why I went with them originally.

Norton has the best marketing, not the best antivirus performance. That's why it's almost always bundled with new pcs and laptops, its the only way they can get rid of it. Do yourself a favour, take it off and use one of the excellent free programs already recommended in this thread. I've used AVG for years without problems.

    I wouldn't call them excellent.

Who cares? You carry on paying for your AV software if that's what you want to do. Those of us comfortable using freeware AV will continue to do the same. Each to their own...
