A question for anyone who has gone to Gatwick by Train
MONEYME
I'm going on holiday on Saturday and I'm about 10 minutes away from Croydon by train. I know I can get a train from Croydon to Gatwick that only takes 15 minutes so my question is:
A return cab would cost £110 whereas return train would cost £40. Do you think I should pay the extra money or go on train with 2 large bags and a 4 year old?
I've never got the train to Gatwick before so don't know how easy it is(far from aiprort etc.)
Thanks.

Train to Gatwick, every day of the week. It's easy, they run regularly, they take you to the middle of the airport, it's WAY cheaper than a cab and your 4 year old will love it. You'd be mad not to. Forgot to say, at Gatwick there are trolleys on the platform, so no problems with bags.Pants0

Tried the trip from South London to Gatwick many times, best to get a cab to East Croydon and the train to Gatwick. Allow extra time to get to the North terminal if you are flying from there.

I was hoping this would be the case - thanks!0 -

Thanks - yes we are flying form the North terminal - I'm going to give myself plenty of time so shouldn't be rushing. How much extr atime would you say though?0 -

I have taken the Gatwick train from hampshire with a 3 year old and 2 large cases. The only problem I found was having not enough room on the train for the cases!! If you don't mind spending a little bit more - I would suggest getting a first class ticket and getting a bit more room. Good luck
SW Convert - started 20/09/09 -3 Stone to lose!!
So far lost 11 1/2lbs :j0 -
Where do you get £40 from?
From East Croydon to Gatwick is £5 single on any FCC train, £7 on any train. So return £22 or £28 for two adults (child is free)
OK you have to get to East Croydon I suppose - split ticketing may work?0 -
Train. No brainer. Dont know where your getting £40 from.0

Well I just did the national rail journey planner for 2 adults, 1 child (didn't realise 4 year old went free until someone mentioned it above) from Sydenham to Gatwick and it came up with £17.25.
Thanks for all the replies - you're putting my mind at ease.0 -
I've done it from Hampshire. Escalator from platform right into departures, easy.0
