Managed to get this place in durham for £45 (double - room only), with on street parking for the sunday FOC.
20mins on the train from Durham to Newcastle Central, anytime returns are £7.10 per adult.

Have you tried Whiley Bay (it is on the Metro system). There are plenty of hotels and BBs there. There is also a caravan site (park resorts).
EDIT: The last time I travelled back up home it was in the UK not overseas!
