Try your local independent computer shop, as well as getting friendly advice you might also get yourself a bargain.
Seeing as most small PC shops I know resell stuff from eBuyer etc, I doubt it...

But it's almost certainly worth a punt, once you've got a good quote from online, just ask them to beat it, go in and tell them you prefer buying on the high street, but really need the best price etc. Follow Martin's haggling guides.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

That is how I do it most of the time. Sadly the nearest computer shop is a fair few miles away. By the time I factor in fuel and parking...............

Try it by all means - but if they want an E8400 for example, it's £126.00 direct from eBuyer.

If you buy 5 or more - you can get them for £125.70 each - save a whole 30p!

Most small shops dont have a dedicated supplier as they don't order enough stock, and many don't hold much stock as few people buy CPU's in real shops (look at PC World) - they devalue quickly.

I'll agree it's always worth a shot - but PC hardware has no margin in it on the internet, so how a local shop is meant to compete I have no idea.

You might not be able to haggle with a local PC shop on price alone, but you might be able to get a bit more service, for example if you buy a motherboard CPU and fan from the shop and want the bits assembled..
