I just phoned the HSBC Plus CS asking for my limit to be raised to £500 on my Debit Card. They told me they do not allow this on their Plus accounts. :(

I do not know what they are on. We keep our money in our account. Who gives them authority to control how much we can get. I just do not understand but give me a great deal of hassle when I need the money urgently (Lending to my friends after working hours...)

Why do you need to get the money out in cash?
Why not use internet banking and use it to transfer it electronically?
If both banks use faster payments it will be very quick.

Many moons ago (when HSBC was Midland in the UK!) and I was a humble student I could beat the limit on my Midland debit card by using a Midland machine and then racing across the road to use a Natwest machine. I seemed to get 3 to 4 minutes and only failed if traffic was heavy. I'm sure it doesn't work like that anymore...

These days I would be scared of high withdrawal limits at ATMs. A mate of mine was marched at knife point to a machine in north London and forced to withdraw up to the limit on all the cards in his possession. OK I would comply, but I would hate them to get away with any more cash than was necessary (regardless of whether the bank refunded it to me).

It's primarily a security issue implemented by Mastercard/Visa.

No you don't. I've been in to HSBC many times with just my debit card and i've withdrawn over the counter.

Lets not go there again - it has been proven (and confirmed by HSBC staff on here) that you DO need paper voucher to withdraw cash. Some branches may allow it but they shouldn't as practice.

Trust me, you turn up at your branch without a paper voucher (cheque/withdrawal slip) they will not give you any cash.

No it is not! It is risk based by the banks - nothing whatsoever to do with Visa/Mastercard.

ATM limits were here long before the days of credit cards - i'm going back to the 70's & 80's when all you had was access or barclaycard! Nothing whatsoever to do with credit cards!

Alos depends on the ATM in question I think

I have a US Bank account at Bank Of America, they have a $2000 a day limit on withdrawals thru ATMS. (But you can change it yourself online)

Anyway they have a No fee agreement with Barclays in the UK so you can use Barclays machines with no fees involved. but even with the $2000 the Barclays ATM will only allow £300 in a transaction.

But if I use my card at Lloyds TSB I can draw up to my limit in a single transaction which also causes problems as I found when I tried to withdraw £1000 in a single transaction and the machine tried to pay it out, it blocked up the machine and caused it to shut down the branch were not impressed at all and it took a while to sort out.

So maybe it also has something to do with the max number of notes the machines can hadle in one go, also of course the more cash you allow out the lower the amount of transactions an ATM can handle without being empty.

I am still angry with what they 'allow' me to take. Safety issue? If I need my money, I would like to get it anytime I like and when I like. I put my money in a bank in good faith but they do not allow me to assess my money when the time is needed. This just really off because they gave us peanuts for interest and charges us hell in mortgages and credit cards...Dont know what to say but want to up my limit in case any emergency.

You can get £600 in cash by using your card twice in the same machine at a HSBC branch. It works - don't know why.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.
