Car Hire in Tunisia

Hello, has anyone hired a car in Tunisia? Any tips or advice or suggested companies? Should we arrange before we go or when we get there?
Any help from those with direct experience would be great, thanks

Car Hire..we always hire a car but the price quoted was expensive, we had a great time in Tunisia with taxis, trains & buses..sooo cheap....we had no probs with taxis and shared taxis were good too, wait on a bus stop and one will stop and usually the price is 1 dinar each...don't tip any less than 500 milles (bout 25p) oh yes and make sure the price quoted for a taxi is for all of you and not per person.

hi, when we went a couple years back we were specifially advised not to hire a car by the on site holiday representative, and also the american manager at the hotel we were staying at who we got chatty with. and to be honest going out and about you can see why literally nearly every car parked had dents all over it and looked a bit like a death trap, they love the horns and hate padestrian crossings etc and drove like nutcases. its the only place we have been to where we never hired a car and were warned not to hire a car.

just looked on the foreign commonwelth office site (www.fco.gov.uk) and they state the following
    Road Travel

Driving in Tunisia can be erratic and sometimes dangerous. There is little lane discipline and pedestrian crossings are ignored. You should take particular care when crossing roads, even where there is a signal allowing you to do so. Driving tends to be fast, even in towns.

Well, we've been now and didn't hire. We used buses and taxis and got on fine.
Thanks - we did have a super holiday though and would love to go back
