Dishwasher makes everything dirtier?!

Just wanted any good tips on cleaning a dishwasher so that it performs back to normal
Everytime we put it on it always seems to leave food on plates etc, to the point where we have stopped using it!
We have tried various "wonder" tablets and nothing really works great.. so think its time to give it a good clean inside...
Just wondered if anyone had any good tips for cleaning and restoring its to full health? - detergents, vinegar etc???
Also whilst im here, is it still beneficial to put the dishwasher tablet in the door (held in place with a flap)?
We thought this maybe the problem so started dropping the tablet directly in the cutlery tray so that it gets dispersed equally...
Any thoughts and tips would be great!

Take out and clean bottom filter.
Buy a dedicated dishwasher cleaner, comes in a small container which you put in the cutlery tray. Read instructionsdone on a hot full wash .

Could be another of your problems.
'cleaning powder/ liquid ' is washed away too quickly
Some boffin spent ages working out when to 'inject' the cleaner , at the right time of the cycle, and you have ruined his life's:D work0 -
As well as the bottom filter, check the spray arms - the outlet holes can get clogged stopping/reducing the water flow which can stop them rotating.0

Have you put salt into it?0

Mine is doing this too, not every time but quite often, the dishes are covered with a hard brownish baked on residue which means we then have to soak them in hot water to remove it.0

Mmmm, mine too.
Got rid of a perfectly good, but old Bosch, and replaced with an integrated Baumatic. Absolute rubbish it is.
Wish I'd never got rid of my old one.
Get tired of having to soak the dishes after they have been 'washed'.0 -
Yeah will give it a clean and retry...0

You have to put the tablet in the door, or else it will be washed away in the pre-wash cycle.
to resume what others have said:
x Check and clean the filter(s) inside the bottom of the washer
x Top up the rinse aid
x put the tablet in the door, and make sure the door is open and empty at the end of the wash
x Check the outlet (waste) hose is not blocked
x check the small filter in the (blue) inlet hose is clear
x top up the salt if you are in a hard water area
x try a few washes on the hottest setting if you normally wash at below 50c.0 -
The salt is very important this is the abrasive that actually removes the debris from the plates.People who live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones...
It is much easier to see other people's failings than our own.0 -
I don't think you are correct.
Salt is required , to soften water, makes the detergent work better.0
