There is no need to move the mirror out of focus, you are insulting the intelligence of the examiner by doing that, he/she will know full well if the mirror/s is/are being used properly.0

Indeed, and I have known an examiner ask a pupil to stop and set their mirror correctly because they had to move their head rather than just their eyes to look into it.
The examiner knows when you are using the mirrors, just as any good driving instructor should know and not give pupils incorrect advice.0 -
Every 7 seconds minimum was the way I was taught...The quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.

I was told about this mirror trick about 2 weeks AFTER I passed (which was about 3 months ago).
As everyone has said, you need to check your mirrors before you do anything really, change of speed/direction/lane etc. Also if you're just driving along normally, you should check them every 5 or 6 seconds.Make sure its not too often or too infrequent, so basically needs to be every 5 or 6 seconds with little leeway either side. If that makes any sense.
What did the examiner say the last 3 times, he should have explained why she failed as thoroughly as your DD needed, and her instructor is allowed to listen in to this explanation.
Something my instructor said to me before my second and final test, I was in my suit as I had come straight from school and he told me to put my tie back on as it would give a good impression. I honestly think it did work as I did several things I would have failed myself if I were the examiner, but I think he was too busy talking to me about my A levels or something to notice me trying to set off from stationary in 4th! So maybe dress reasonably smartly; I was just in home clothes on my first test and failed.0 -
The moving mirror out of focus isn't exactly new - I first read it in a car magazine in mid 1960s!If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Sounds like Funky and I had the same instructor! Or it is off-repeated advice :rotfl:
:rotfl:
whatever you do, do NOT do this! it makes the driving examinor think you are a !!!!!! who cant position your mirrors properly! my instructor knows of at least 2 students who have failed for this reason....
as for checking them, always check centre mirror then applicable door mirror(s) when moving off, slowing down, pulling out, changing lanes, going round parked traffic and back in again etc.0
