Yep Harry seems to perk up a bit on half a soluble asprin and as long as its not too regular it only seems to do him good in the short term and in the long term well there 13 arn't they !!!!! I always put Harry's Metacam over a piece of chicken in his bowl on top of his food its the first thing he always eats !!!!!! Funny that he may be old but not stupid !!! He is having quite a bad day today because of the humidity can see his chest going up and down quite deeply.

Do you need to hide the rimadyl? My dog waits patiently for hers straight after brekkie! Well she did, but she's just the same with the carprofen.

All other tablets have to be hidden tho!!

Hope your doggys ok now x.

  • Definitely go and find out what else can be given. I often find that a change of anti-inflammatory to a different "class" can make all the difference, but I usually only give a couple of weeks trial before making a full judgement. Options could include

Previcox (expensive but good (not always helpful))
PLT - about the same cost but contains a DMOAD (Disease modifying agent) which often just makes the difference.
"Add-in" Tramadol - not an NSAID (Non steroidal anti-inflammatory like rimadyl / metacam) or pain killer as such but has DMOAD effect.
"Add-in" phenobarbitone - its an antiepileptic to most but can have an odd-helping effect when added to NSAIDs.
"add-in" diazepam - as for the above
Morphine tablets / methadone - very good but have a few issues which need to be gotten straight with the client before prescribing.

See: Nowhere near the end of the line with some creative thinking.
You will need a vet who can take pain management a bit beyond the straightforward though, as you can see. Not everyone will be comfortable with many of these and some are "way off-piste" and need to be carefully documented to make sure no rules are broken.

My mum's rung me in floods of tears. their 13 year old lab is on her way out. She's on Rimadyl for her arthritus (sorry bout spelling) but last few days she's got progressively worse, won't eat, tail between her legs when walking and lots and lots of moulting like she's stressed.
Does rimadyl contain a pain reliever? I know she's not supposed to be given human drugs but I am just wondering if there was something we could give her to ease her discomfort for today so she can go to vets tomorrow.

My mum just wishes she'd die in her sleep :( this is the part I hate about having pets........
Rymadyl is actually an anti imflammitory, My dog was on them for weeks, even months with his eye ulcer and after reading some of the negativity surrounding these pills i actually rang our vets to ask if there was an alternative but was told "don't believe everything you read on the net". Fortunately for us our dog was fine on them but i do know that they can react for some other dogs. They are the doggie form of ibruprofen i was told. I would make sure that these pills are not causing the illness now. I hope your mums dog gets better and something that suits her prescribed soon.
