Does anyone know how much painkiller Rimadyl contains?

My mum's rung me in floods of tears. their 13 year old lab is on her way out. She's on Rimadyl for her arthritus (sorry bout spelling) but last few days she's got progressively worse, won't eat, tail between her legs when walking and lots and lots of moulting like she's stressed.
Does rimadyl contain a pain reliever? I know she's not supposed to be given human drugs but I am just wondering if there was something we could give her to ease her discomfort for today so she can go to vets tomorrow.
My mum just wishes she'd die in her sleep
this is the part I hate about having pets........

It's an anti-inflammatory drug, not really a painkiller.
My mum used Rimadyl & have to say it didn't agree with her old arthritic Akita at all, causing similar syptoms to your mums lab. Apparently it can cause stomach & liver problems in some dogs... do a google search for possible side effects.
She switched to Metacam which worked with little or no adverse reaction.
Talk to your vet but I would lay of the Rimadyl until you have.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Rosie (the lab) has been on Rimadyl for several years now and not had any adverse reactions to it. I honestly think she's just nearing the end of her time with us.
I thought that Rimadyl had a doggie ibuprohen in it so anti imflammatory as well as pain relief.
Oh well if they can give her some pain relief at vets tomorrow hopefully she'll last a few more weeks but am not holding my breath really. Just cooked her some nice chicken and mash since her teeth are past it and so eating can be painful also.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife

It's quite possible she's just "had enough" bless her, if that's the case she needs some more effective pain relief to make her last weeks as comfortable as poss.
Get to the vet as soon as.... like you said this is the worst part about having pets, I've been there more times than I care to remember.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Perhaps it's not the Rimadyl that's causing the problem? Best get her checked at the vet to make sure there's nothing else the matter with her.
My dog (labby X) had been on Rimadyl 50 (1 a day) for some years and is 13 in September. My vet has recently taken her off Rimadyl in favour of Carprofen, but they are much the same thing.
As with all anti-inflammatories it is vitally important it is taken after food.
She is also moulting quite heavily because of the heat.....:wave:0 -

She actually moults all year round and even with previous years hot weather she's never shed hair at the rate she is at the mo so can only conclude that it's stress related.
I hope the vet can give her something stronger to ease her pain and stiffness and perhaps make her little bit of time with us a bit more bearable. she always has her Rimadyl with her food and we don't think this is what's causing her discomfort. She is really stiff in her back legs and has lost weight in the last week.

I'll keep everything crossed that it's nothing serious.....do keep us updated.

Rimadyl is an anti-inflammatory and as most (not all) pain is down to inflammation, acts as a painkiller as well. How much painkiller depends on the dose as it is available in 3 strengths. There is a dose range so it may be possible to increase the dose but I would get your vet's opinion as it may be time to say goodbye.0

I am in the same position as your mom with a 13 yr old pointer so understand her situation. Its so sad to see my best friend just so tired really. He has been on metacam for a few years and as with your lab his back legs are very weak. This heat does not help either and I have just got a electric fan out for him. I have in the past done half a soluble asprin on his dinner!!!! The trouble with keep taking him to the vet is that it stresses him and its so expensive I do want the best for my mate but even the vet can't turn back the years for him no matter what expensive drugs they try to sell me. I just have to try and keep him as comfortable as possible.0

this is also a problem for my mums lab.
She gave her half a soluble asprin the other day and she's perked up a bit. Even went for a little walk this morning. She was staying with my grandparents whilst my parents were on hols (as she wouldn't be comfortable in caravan) and they are now wondering whether my grandparents dog was stealing her food and the Rimadyl it contained.
We may have a temporary reprieve fingers crossed.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife
