could be that the LSP chain is broken , download malwarebytes and doa quick scan

download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
    • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.

have you tried using firefox or opera instead of windows explorer.

windows explorer is pretty slow imo and heavily clogged
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

I had a similar problem some time ago - looked like it was connecting, but then either didn't show the page (with "done" bottom-left of status bar), or came up with the error page. Using Tools/Delete Browsing History/Delete All cured it (after a close down and restart).

This was with a previously-working system - IE7 on Win XP Pro. Not really sure when/why it stopped working - I use Firefox for browsing and IE for updates only.
