I went to Vietnam May 2008, we went to Hanoi & Halong Bay & I would say it is a wonderful country. I think if you go here you would be going at the right time, ie before it gets any more Westernised. You can already tell the country is changing. A month would give you the time to travel the length of the country.
Have a wonderful time whatever you choose.

round the world sounds good too!
trying not to get big city overload though, best bit about thailand was outside bangkok, but maybe that's just bangkok for you...
Yeah, that's how I feel about Bangkok. I love the place for 2 or 3 days, but after then I also love leaving it too
I go to SE Asia for 2 weeks each autumn and always get very jealous when I meet people who are doing a slow wander around the region following their noses.0 -
New Zealand? That's where I'm off to for 3weeks over Christmas and New Year :j

Seriously put the idea of Malaysia out of your head, there really is not enough to do there in 2 weeks, let alone 4. We hada really really disaopointing holiday there ( independently travelling) and it was really really diappointing.
Plus side- food was good. halfway through we nearly crossed the border to thailand we were so bored.
If I were you Id go to Brazil:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

What?! I did 2 weeks in Malaysia last year and only scratched the surface. I usually go to Thailand but went to Malaysia last year due to the uncertain political climate in Thailand at the time. Granted KL gets a bit dull after 3 days, but I loved the hustle and bustle of Penang then had a great relaxing time in Langkawi. I didn't even get chance to do the Cameron Highlands or the east coast. I'm sure to go back in he next few years.
Yes, the food is one of the best reasons to go - an amazing fusion of Malay, Thai, Indian, Chinese and Western all for amazingly cheap prices. The only downside was the cost of alcohol - apart from in Langkawi which is duty free.0 -
I knew I would get a great response on here - thanks so much!
I'm known for my indecisiveness so arrrrrrrr! eek
the funny thing is as soon as we've got a month to play with (well, I might not but boyf does so that's good enough for me!) I think it's not enough to do everything!0 -
i would really recommend a week in bali followed by 3 in australia (we got a good price in 2007 to fly from heathrow to bali (via a couple hour stop at dubai for fueling, but you can make it a stop over if you wish) then from bali to sydney, then we travelled through australia and flew from darwin back to london heathrow (again with a couple hour stop in dubai not that we left the airport lol!)
other suggestions, i would also recomment new york, and possibly travel round the us
or a road trip around canada??MFW#105 - 2015 Overpaid £8095 / 2016 Overpaid £6983.24 / 2017 Overpaid £3583.12 / 2018 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2019 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2020 Overpaid £2583.12/ 2021 overpaid £1506.82 /2022 Overpaid £2975.28 / 2023 Overpaid £2677.30 / 2024 Target: £1800, £1449.85 overpaid as at August 2024 so YTD = £1449.85 Total OP since mortgage started in 2015 = £34,842.030 -
At the time you are thinking of, I would say avoid Latin America, unless you are really interested in the religious side of their culture. Everything just grinds to a halt over big religious holidays, and you will have to plan around it very carefully to not find yourself wasting days waiting for transport or hotel rooms to become available. If you do try it, then don't forget to check out the local saints days and observances in each area as well as the major holiday dates.
From your list, I would say Japan, it's a fantastic country, easy to get around, loads to do, the fun of a secular Christmas (is there any other culture that throws themselves into festivals as much as the Japanese?), without the logistical hassles of a religious Christmas. It's so expensive though, however much you think you'll spend, double it, and that still won't be enough!
I wasn't especially taken with Malayasia, though my OH loved it. But I wouldn't say there was little to do, we could have filled out time there many times over.
What about Hong Kong and China? Or South Africa? Or Egypt? When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -
It has to be India!
Fly to Mumbai, travel to Rajasthan for a fortnight, party in Goa for a week, see as much of south India as you can do in another week, probably just Hampi and Mysore. Travel by overnight train. You will come away with memories to last a lifetime, and a longing to return and see more.

The possibilities are endless... I'm feeling quite jealous!0
