Do students get punished for having a part time job when applying for sudent loans?

Im starting my degree this september and have just completed the online application for finance. Im 28 and live with my mum at the moment who is also a low income earner.

Question is, do students only receive the full entitlement if they literally dont have any income? Is that how it works?

I've got a part time reverse term-time job to fit in around my degree and im concerned SF wont give me the full entitlement. I have no savings, no children and classed as independent.

Another question - those who do receive the full allowance, how much do you receive? Is it £3k for student loan and £3k for maintenance grant - therefore around £2k each term?

Thanks guys, i appreciate your help alot.

Every £1 grant you are entitled to, they take 50p from student loan, or something to that effect.

    Example:

You are entitled to £1000 grant
Student loan base is something like £3300

They take £500 from student loan, and give you £1000 grant, so you get £2700 loan and £1000 grant.

Not sure if indendant are different, but I earnt £2500 in the year and put this down on student finance and it didn't change it (I wasn't income assessed though and not independant)

You'll be considered an independent student and assessed on your own income. Unless you're well paid and/or working full time, you'll get the full entitlement. If you stay living with your mother and she's the only other adult in the househols, she'll get a 25% discount on her council tax.

so the most i am likely to receive is probably £4500 for the year? i.e. £3k student loan and £1.5k maintenance grant, is that right? Would i still be in a position to apply for uni bursary aswell?

I really appreciate your help - thank you.

Uni bursarys are dependant on the university.

And the course. They'll be a minimum of £300.

OP, don't forget that the loan/bursary isn't taxed and normally part time term work isn't either. You should receive £2,906 Maintenance Grant and £3,497 Maintenance Loan if you're starting your degree in 2009, giving you a total of £6,403 plus any bursaries. (See www.direct.gov.uk for confimation.)

Sorry, im confused - Lokolo said that of every £1 i received for a student loan, 50p will be deducted from the grant? Therefore i'll only receive maximum £4500 per year? I would struggle to live on this to be honest.. but i wouldnt struggle on £6,000k..

This is based on last years figures. I have used this to explain what is said on the loan notification letter.

    ............Basic loan (non-income assessed)..................£3470
............Plus loan subject to income assessment..........£1155
............Less loan substituted for grant *.....................£1260

    ............Maximum loan available.................................£3365
    ............Loan requested..............................................£3365
    ............Loan paid.......................................................£3365

    ............Maintenance Grant.........................................£2835

    * this portion of you maintenance is being met through the Maintenance Grant. Your entitlement to repayable student finance through the Maintenance Loan therefore has been reduced to reflect this. This substitution of loan for grant does not affect your overall entitlement to maintenance support.

This year the Maintenance Grant is £2906. I don't know the loan amount.
Your Mum will be income assessed as you live with her. I am income assessed for my son who is away at university.

hey rikki, thanks for your email..

Why would my mum be income assessed if i am classed as independent? Im 28, so im not dependent on her therefore, the income assessment should be on me alone.... All very confusing this!!

Ok, so if she earns £15,500 per annum and i earn £6,500 per annum would that mean i should be entitled to the full amount of just over £6k in loans?I.e. £3k maintenance loan and £3k mainetenance grant?

Is it it the maintenance loan which is non-income assessed and the maintenance grant is income assessed? All im bothered about is receiving the full amount given i fall under the £25k household income bracket...

You will receive the amount oldernotwiser has stated, as far as I can see.

You would still receive that if your mum's income was taken into account, but it won't be because you are over 25.

Then there will be the uni bursary of at least £300. If you contact the financial advisor, or amdission dept, they should be able to tell you how much they pay to students entitled to the full support package.

Your part time income will not make a difference.

    Hope that helps

    From www.direct.gov.co.uk

"The tables below show some example figures to give you an idea of how much help you could get towards accommodation and other living costs through the Maintenance Grant and Student Loan for Maintenance.
Figures based on a student starting in 2009/2010 who is living away from home and studying outside London

Household incomeMaintenance GrantStudent Loan for MaintenanceTotal for 2009/2010
    £25,000 £2,906 £3,497 £6,403

    £30,000£1,906£3,997£5,903£34,000£1,106£4,397£5,503£40,000£711£4,595£5,306£50,020£50£4,925£4,975£60,000No grant£3,564

    £3,564"

Damn, that was supposed to come out as a chart, don't know what I've done wrong but I've tried to highlight the relevant figures for you. This shows that if your income is less than £25,000, you'll get £2,906 Maintenance Grant, £3,497 Maintenace Loan, giving you a total of £6,403. Probably better to look at the site itself as I seem to have jiggered it!

You won't be assessed on your mum's income as you're over 25 and considered to be an independent student.
