LCD gone dark any ideas?

Sounds like a broken wire then ..... try moving the screen backwards and forwards to see if you can confirm that.0

I agree with Coldfinger.
LCD panles have a backlight which can fail after about 3 years.0 -
Just managed to get it back working but I am not sure how! The laptop is currently dark but on first boot up it stayed on but flickering for a few minutes so I am now thinking maybe a cable is faulty leading to the screen.
If the light had failed then it is doubtful that you would have seen it working again. I had a look at the excellent site coldfinger recommended - good but very expensive if its a broken wire. I personally would have a look at the wires first - they are most likely to break where they bend.0 -
Agreed, the broken wire sounds likely but it may also be that the connector is coming apart/loose etc.
It may also be that the bulb is iffy though.
A little investigation will be needed to solve the mystery but the wire will be cheaper.
I offered the link as an example, I haven't used the vendor. As ever, shop around.0 -
Try this,
Power off laptop. Slide the brightness control all the way to the left. Power on the laptop. If screen lights up (dim as the brightness is turned down) you will probably need an inverter card IBM part number 10L1350 . See item 5 here

Thanks for all your suggestions everyone.

I am currently using my work machine which is great but I don't like doing my banking on it in case I compromise the security.
I think I will have a look at replacing the laptop as it is quite old & slow.
Martins laptop hunt in the newsletter is quite timely for me.0 -

I'm so fed up of reading bumped old threads. MSE should have a warning at the top when an old thread has been revived. I have seen this on other forums.0 -

Welcome to MSE you wonderful chap.
You can't construct a paragraph so you aren't much use offering advice/support to anyone. That coupled with the above will hopefully see the bax of you.
