Last time my wife flew out to Canada she (and her two children) were given an upgrade to First! Saves a bit on the free champagne I suppose ;)
    Can I help?

Why wouldn't children be able to fly first class?

It's certainly not a problem on Virgin Atlantic (which is a much better airline IMHO). I'm flying my 14 year old daughter across to the USA in first class over the summer holidays.

The OP was talking about a free upgrade.

It is difficult enough to get a free upgrade and virtually every airline has to upgrade its Elite class frequent flyers first. Not many children have this status.

Nit-picking here (sorry!) but technically Virgin Atlantic's Upper Class is not regarded as a first class product in the industry, but rather business class. However, I've heard lots of good things about it!

If I had paid that much money for First class on BA I would like there to be no children in the cabin - a bit of piece and quiet, thanks.

Did you Know: It costs more than £325,000 a day to run the lifeboat service? (with no government funding) Please donate to the RNLI

You are correct. Virgin advertise it as first class service at business class prices. I have flown in British Airways Club World (aka business class) a couple of times and it was nothing to write home about. I have flown in Virgin Upper Class at least 20 times, maybe more, and I absolutely love it. The cabin has a bar with bar stools that you can spend the whole flight sitting on if you want to. You get an in-flight massage - from Sydney to Hong Kong last year I had two and turned down a third!. The lounges in Heathrow are like nothing I have ever seen in my life. The bottom line is that Upper Class far exceeds what BA provides in business class and is an equal if not a better than BA's first class.

I know which I would choose if I were spending my own money to fly!

Just what i was thinking, but i was not brave enough to say it, i have never flown in first, only in business, and there were children in the cabin, must admit that they were very well behaved though.

Some airlines offer a split class family service, where they will look after the children in economy and the parents sit in business.
