Ram upgrade

Hi I want to upgrade my RAM I have some questions..
1. Can I just take RAM out of my old computer which doesn't work and put in my new one or does the RAM have to be specific to a certain make of computer?
2. I've watched an instructional video on You tube and the guy is wearing some weird wrist strap with a clip on the end he puts inside the computer before changing the RAM, do I have to have one of these to install new RAM and what is it for?
Thanks

The RAM will need to be the correct type for your PC - www.crucial.com/uk has a utility which will let you find out what type is in your machine.
Most memory/PC vendors would probably suggest an anti static wrist strap, it's a good precaution.
However, I've been building and upgrading PCs for 15 odd years now, never worn a wrist strap, and never killed any components.0 -
Thank you so much I'm still not sure what the wrist strap does but as I don't have one I'll have to make do without it

There are different types of RAM and each computer will only take certain types. It's possible the the old RAM will work in the new computer. Download cpuz and find out what sort of memory you have. Then look at the old RAM and see what it says on it (should be a label).
The strap is to stop static electricity damaging anything. I've never used one. You can just touch something metallic to discharge any static before proceeding.0 -

This explains a little bit about what the straps are for

The Aspire will take PC3200. Unfortunately as that is the previous generation of RAM (DDR2 is now standard) it is getting more expensive. I would sugest having a look at maybe ebay for some either 512MB sticks to take it to 1GB (which will likely cost you under a tenner) or 1GB sticks (brands like Corsair, Kingston and Crucial are all decent).0

Either of the first two..Transcend or Hynix(at under £23) should be fine. Specify in your comments that you only want a low density RAM module.0
