Sad

My little hamster past away last night, or rather my OH's did since she was his. I'm really sad now though. i can't cope with out a little baby. We are waiting on getting a dog at the minute but that could be a while off.

Is there anything you could suggest we can adopt (not a cat - OH has allergies) that doesn't require too much effort? We have had rats and hamsters and other little critters and don't want anymore of these.

I'd like something with minimum effort really...and not to expensive to keep. We have no real outside space for rabbits or guinea pigs. Thanks.

From what you say i'd say not to get the dog at all.

Guinnie pigs are great and talk to you as well.

No thats why I want something with minimum effort because we are getting a dog! I know dogs are LOTs of effort and I don't want anything that would be lots of effort on TOP of a dog I should have said.

The dog is none negotiable...we've been planning for this dog for nearly 18 months now. It's just a matter of waiting for the house to be done then we shall be bringing one home.

  • could you do some dog walking for your local rescue, to get you up to speed for taking a dog on (get some practice!), fulfil your desire to spend some tine with animals, but with less commitment than taking home another pet?

Problem is I signed up to do this with my local rescue...but they never call back. I've called about 5 times now about it - OH wants to do it too! And I'm a teacher so have long summers (not on summer now...but at home due to vomiting bug - I'm soooo bored) and could do it whenever they wanted in that time. Its very frustrating.

We quite often steal my folks or inlaws dogs for walks and playing but it's not the same as having your own little baby at home.

Well, sorry to hear about your hamster but as you are waiting for a dog (and many dogs arent too happy about little furries in the house) - perhaps it would be best not to get any more pets for the time being.

Which rescue hasnt replied to you? Where abouts in the country are you? Anywhere near Oswaldtwistle?

Sorry to hear of your loss, myself and OH have had 4 hamsters over the 4 years we have been together.

We decided after Anni died, that this was our last hamster we were going to own. I have also had albino rats in the past. As lovely as they all are, their life span is so short and very prone to cancer.

Brian our one hamster lasted 3.5 years (died of old age) and Teddy only 6 months (cancer).

We now have 2 cats, totally different I know, but I have always loved cats.
  • If you get any small furry, you will the have a job trying to find a dog that will not try and kill it... not always an easy task.

I would concentrate my efforts on trying to find a local rescue that needs a dog walker if I were you - maybe you could try your local rescue again (they are probably overworked and staffed mainly by volunteers hence the delay in returning phone calls) and ask how you could help them, or look for another rescue locally, or offer your services on rescuehelpersunite, or dogpages?

Oh, not to forget Cinammon Trust - who arrange for dog walkers for elderly persons who can no longer manage it themselves?
