Help, my laptop display looks like this......

Hi everyone, turned on my laptop tonight to find the screen all garbled and my desktop looking like this, close up:

or full desktop:

No error messages that I can read, other than something that looked like script error and debugging a webpage but I haven't got the web open.

Can anyone give me any pointers on whether this is my display card gone south, a virus, or something else? Everything on the laptop seems to be working fine at start up - sound, mouse, keyboard etc, just the display problem.

Cheers

What happens if you start in safe mode? If the display is then ok you will need to adjust some settings. If it still shows the problem then it's probably hardware.
Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!

    Tis frying tonight!!! :p

I spy a HP Pavilion DV6000? It's overheated and cooked the graphics card... Your best bet would be to contact HP and get it fixed via the warrenty. (new mainboard)

You'll be very very lucky if it's something else. You can try pushing down towards the top left by the keyboard as it may be a lose connection for the monitor but I doubt it.

How do I start in safe mode please?

It's a DV2000 actually, and is 21 months old so guess it's out of warranty. Is this overheating a problem then?

Restart the computer and start pressing [F8] repeatedly from the moment the screen goes blank. If it works, you'll see something like this.

It looks to me like what would happen if the refresh rate was wrong, but I didn't know you could do that on a laptop.
Can you startup Windoze in Safe Mode (I think you hold down F5 or F8 when booting, or alternatively plug in an external display, and play around with the display settings (ie. go to the lowest and progress from there)?

That happened with my Acer, and then a month down the line my son's did exactly the same, the local pooter shop has had mine apart and it;s the graphics card that is goosed, and as it's part of the mother board, then you need a new mother board or a new laptop. Mine was doing some lovely patterns, which as a screen saver were very nice, but rendered the laptop un workable.

Tried the safe mode suggestion and the screen is still garbled, even on the B & W safe mde menu so not that. Tried taking power and battery out for a while and not that either.

I suspect Jaffa and Joe_f are correct in that it's the graphics chip. Jaffa implied this was a known problem? Looks like it could be a new laptop - not going to do HP again - any suggestions?

it is a very well known problem my guess is that 90% of all hp dv series laptops will eventually die due to this

its a massivly known inherent fault

you can go to the consumer rights thread and post about how to go about getting a repair under the sale of goods act as your next step
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

The above may not be relevant but I would phone/email HP an ask them if this is a known problem and see what you can get out of them.

The whole range has problems with overheating - affects the whole DV range and some Compaq's.
