is there a way of hiding your IP address, i.e. making you non-traceable on WAn or LAN network, to hackers, trojans or malicious software.

Simple answer is no. An ip address is something your computer needs in order to function on a tcp/ip based network. Hiding it, or not having one would basically render your computer unusable online, or within you LAN.
You can however, hide your ip from most internet servers and p2p. This is basically done by using an external proxy. Only thing then, is the proxy has a full log of your activities, so make sure it's trusted!
If you have a dynamic ip assigned by your ISP, then you need not worry too much. Most web servers will log ip addresses, but it'll generally be meaningless. If you're really paranoid, just make sure you don't visit any dodgy sites.

Didn't we go through all this a few days ago? Somebody wanted to change their IP think.Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.

im just learning in greater detail how the internet works, IP address keep coming up. I was reading BBc news today and there has been another surge record labels sueing illegal downloaders, so i got thinking how do they know they you have been downloading and how do they knw where you are - IP address! so then i got thinking is there a way of hiding IP address.........
so using a proxy sever means (in laymans terms) that you route all your internet traffic through someone elses server thus there IP address shows? bit isn't the original users IP address linked to the proxy server making it traceable?0 -
The thing is a lot of P2P doesn't work well with proxy servers, and will give you horribly slow download speeds if you try. If you don't want to risk getting caught for illegally downloading copyrighted material, don't do it.
The proxy server will have a record of your IP address, and since you (usually) don't know who they are you can't really trust them, or they could be forced to release their logs by a court order.0 -

SiMaster, they say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. What's your end goal or are you just being nosey about how the 'net works? If so, I'd recommend spending some time on Google first looking at some of the many useful guides that explain everything you could possible want to know0
