The start of the campaign for 50 MPH limits

Options
Has anyone seen in the news today that a road safety group has announced that the majority of the UK's A roads are unsafe?
Whats the next thing going to be. Do you think it will be a campaign to have more of our road tax money spent on maintaining and repairing the roads? Or a campaign to reduce the limit to 50 MPH.
How many accidents every year are caused by poor roads? Or by vehicle defects caused by poor roads?

How should road safety be improved. 47 votes

Or by drivers who would be speeding regardless of the speed limit.......

Well the majority of Warwickshires A roads have already changed to 50.

One way to improve safety would be to make all roads, (B, C) which are not wide enough for a cantre white line, a maximum 30mph. Local country lanes are not safe to use cycles on due to cars and vans speeding faster than is safe but within national speed limit.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

The survey saying UK roads are unsafe is by a European group, the facts that UK roads are safer than they were is shown by the statistics on injury/deaths.

I already ignore most national speed limit signs, changing the sign to one which says 50mph just means I'll be breaking the speed limit by 10mph more.

A national speed limit sign does not mean it is safe to drive at 60 on all roads in all conditions (nor 50, for that matter), and a 10 mph reduction is meaningless anyway.
These reduction in speed limits are just a way of town/road planners justifying their existence.

people who drive at inappropiate speeds will still drive at inappropiate speeds regardless of the speed limit. A blanket 50 will only annoy people who stick to speed limits...
  • Inappropiate speed and the speed limit are nearly always two different things. A blanket speed limit of 50 will just make this increase this disparity on a lot of roads.

This lets pick the lowest common denominator, that way one size will fit all approach really annoys me. Why can't the lazy bugg3rs start actually looking at indvidual roads and set the limits accordingly. That way speed limits may regain some of the respect they deserve, until then myself and others will continue to drive according to the conditions whether it corresponds with the speed limit or not!!!

I would've liked an option for: 'educate drivers better, make the test harder, and mandatory every time you want a licence (ie at least every 10 years), and concentrate on driving ability and attitude instead of just slowing everyone down'.
But in the absence of that I said fix the roads. Are they broken?
  • The councils should spend money and stop using SMA as a universal road surface.

The stones are mixed with tar and then spread which means under heavy (emergency) braking the heat generated between tyre and road causes the tar to melt and hey presto find yourself skidding towards the very object you're trying to avoid. Police crash investigators have cited this in many accident reports but does anyone in government pay attention?

Inappropriate speeds for the conditions cause problems, not vanilla speeding...
