    Fixing the roads.
its all very well lowering the speed limit on country roads....but how will it be "policed".....its a bit like "if a tree falls in a forest and theres no one there...does it make a sound"....

if the speed limit is 30mph....and there's no one there....does it matter what speed you go?....yet another stupid government initiative...better to fix the roads I say....money better spent....

and don't start me on speed cams...yes it will catch the confident, mature, responsible, capable driver 5mph or whatever OVER the speed limit....but it misses ALL of the people driving with drink, drugs, no licence etc who are under the limit...now you tell me which is worse!
    I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:

Fixing the roads would be nice, fixig the drivers would be much better.

What about speed bumps ? I've just had to spend £250 to replace my front suspension - cause "speed bumps".
Some are ok , smooth effective but others no matter what speed you drive at cause you to really hammer your front end even at very low speed. There should be some sort of standardized approved bump rather than let council workers build them as they please.

They should be no higher than 100mm (10cm). The idiots who are paid through our taxes will never actually do anything to put it right though.

Though that means squat to the council in this area. In a council estate (maybe where the highways people live...) the bumps are so shallow and narrow I can drive over them at 30mph without feeling them. In my area the bumps are vicious even at 10mph, very frustrating.

Does anyone enforce these regulations ? Probably not - it's far easier to tax motorists with speed cameras

There's a trunk road round here that is split between two local authorities. I met one of the residents, who told me the fatal accident history:

    1 car missed bend
    2 motorbike missed bend
    1 aircraft crash

The first local authority looked at the fatal accident figures and imposed a 50mph speed ban and removed the cat's eyes. The other local authority painted white lines along the outer edges, repainted the central line and installed cat's eyes between every dash but kept the speed limit at 60mph.

As a result the 60mph road feels much safer and is much less stressful to drive along at night or in the rain. No sure which is actually safer.
