Lec Fridge/Freezer not working after only 13 months!

Hello,
I bought a Lec fridge/freezer TF5586S in May last year from Argos, and now in June, only 13 months later it wont work. There is a constant bubbling and gurgling coming out of the machine, but it never gets cold. I got in touch with Lec who said they would send round an engineer, the engineer then phoned me back the night before he was due to come round and asked me to explain what the problem was, I explained, he said "you need a new compressor" it turned out the compressor would be £100 and the call out charge £88.50, that makes £188.50! What, I could buy a new fridge/freezer for that! My question is, is there not a grace period for a few days after a 12 month gaurantee period on items like this? As someone who has bought several items from Lec before I find having to pay £188.50 to have a £250 fridge freezer repaired to be hard to swallow!

What did customer services say?I love surprises!0

Well I got in touch with customer services and I was told, as it was just over the gaurantee there would only be the call out, so I don't know where they get the £188.50 from, but 13 months for a fridge/freezer must be record, my last fridge lasted from 1983 to 2008 but it was very small, it was a Phillips.:o0

You need to contact Argos. You bought something from them, so your contract is with them, not Lec. Ring Argos and tell them it's faulty, if they tell you to ring Lec, tell them that they are going to charge you and you're not prepared to pay to get something fixed that shouldn't be broken.
This falls under the sale of goods act so don't let them fob you off.
You are entitled to a replacement, repair or refund at no cost to you. Think happy & you'll be happy

Are you sure about the last bit?0 -

Out of guarantee. Period
You are so very wrong. This is how companies make so much money with their pointless extended warranties, that aren't worth the paper they are written on. Under the sale of goods act, some items are covered for up to SIX YEARS. So please, get your facts right.
Halloway - yes i'm sure of the last bit. It's reasonable to expect a fridge/freezer to last more than 13 months so Argos must repair, replace it or give them a refund. Think happy & you'll be happy

Some Items? So you know for sure that this item is covered do you? the original post said 12 months guarantee. That is the fact on the table.0 -

You are getting confused. The 12 month guarantee is something companies offer, this forms part of the contract. What I am referring to is the OP's statutory rights. The 12 guarantee is irrelevent.
Fridge/freezers should last more than 13 months and that is a fact. I've just read online that environmentalists say they should last 10 - 15 years.
OP - please contact Argos and ask them to sort it out for you. It's up to them, not Lec. Think happy & you'll be happy

Who says they should last 10-15 years?! Who made that figure up? That's not a fact, that's a finger in the air.
If that was true no-one . NO-ONE would EVER have to buy a fridge freezer EVER again, they would get replaced INDEFINITELY.0
