:P I got a stinkin cold. I usually use a store brand capsule as they have just the same ingredients in as leading brands but for 1/3 less. But it's not getting to the throat and chest.
Anyone got a better idea? Ther must be a pharmacist out there, or a happy MSE member with relief from their cold? Thanks. office party tomorrow and I feel PANTS (not literally)

If shivery, stinking head, body feels like lead - try extra flu strength drinks, but don't mix with other paramocetol drugs.
Inhale essential oils, so long as you don't have breathing problems generally (such as asthma). Try couple of drops of oil in hot water - eucalyptus, lavender, tea-tree.0 -
I use large doses of vitamin C.
Redoxon do some fizzy orange tablets which contain 1000mg of vitamin C plus zinc.
Boots also have a version.
They are not cheap but they do work IMO.0 -
I second the vitamin c caspsuales they really work. Patrick Holdford author of the nutirion bible suggests taking lots of the 1000 mg tablets throughout the day to combat the cold ( you cant overdose on vitamin c as your body disposes of it every time you go to the toilet ).
Another thing I found good was a good old liquid cold medicine from boots ( they had them on special last week at £1.00) for either chesty or nasal colds. This really made me feel much better last week - just like your mother would give you !
just wrap up and get plenty of sleep when possible.Old Faithful we roam the range together,

Buy a big box of 120mg Vit C and take one every hour (have been told large doses of Vit C act as a laxative).
Olbas oil in a bowl of boiling water and inhale.
Otrovine nasal spray (£2.49 from Savers) to help reduce being "Bunged up".
Paracetamol helps to reduce inflammation as well.
And some people say Echinacea helps as well.
Failing that, honey/lemon & whisky drink :-)0 -
echinecea, echinecea ,echinecea EVERY TIME
sorry about spelling. don't bother with expensive brands, go for cheap supermarket own they are just the same.
The theory is they reduce and shorten the effects of a cold and if you haven't got one they can reduce your chances as they boost your immune system. Def Vit C too and zinc is very good.Tried and Tested0 -
Prevention is better than cure, so try to avoid touching your face (especially the eyes or nose) if you're in crowded places like pubs, shops etc. Wash your hands as soon as you get home.
Next time you visit the USA (or ask a friend to bring some back), buy some Zicam cold remedy. It dramatically reduces the duration of a cold (max of two days) and the severity of a cold. I've been using Zicam for a few years now.........it really works.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j [/COLOR]:cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Och you heathens....
Right this will sort you out as the above say plenty vitamin C but also:
Last thing at night have a nice hot bath.
Then prepare a Hot Toddy:-
1 large glass (irish coffee sort of size)
1 or 2 measures Scotch;
A tablespoon or more lemon juice,
Big dollop of honey (to your taste) (or sugar)
Add boiling water
2 paracetemol
Then off to bed.
Probably does bu**er all for the cold but you do get a much better nights sleep.0 -
A spoonful of black treacle and couple of drops of lemon juice in hot water seems to help. Blow your nose and throw away the tissues dont keep using them.
Wash your hands often.
Keep your head warm but dont sit in front of the fire or radiator especially with your back to it.
Get plenty of sleep.0 -
Vitamen C tablets and hot honey and lemon works for me.
