help needed with Avira

Avira isn't updating any more, probably because I didn't update to version 9 when the pop-ups came up. Then they stopped.
I have been reading the threads, and trying to make it update & it won't. The box comes up and nothing happens, it says its connecting and then it says Internet connection failed, and I think it said internal error once.
Unable to contact friend who installed Avira, and I'm technically terrified, so would be glad of any help.

(I have Windows XP, Pro. Version 2002 Service Pack 3) just looked it up

thanks

Download the latest version to your desktop, get it - http://www.free-av.com/
Close your internet connection, Uninstall old Avira, install new version, connect to internet then update Avira, you're done.

Thank you very much - bit nervous but I just kept clicking 'next' on the set up wizard thing, and it seems to have worked OK. Sigh of relief!!

I am having the same problems and I'm not great on the computer either. How do you uninstall the old Avira?

    Many thanks.

If you're using Windows XP, go to StartControl Panel and choose Add or Remove Programs. Select the application you wish to remove and click the button marked Remove that appears alongside it.

If you're using Windows Vista, refer to this for instructions instead.

Thank you so much for this. I have, I think, successfully installed the new version. The only problem is now that the Avira umbrella is not open and the guard status is unknown. I have looked on the avira website and forum but everything is just too complicated for me (who is useless with the computer) to understand. Can anyone help? Thank you so much.

    Try this
    Go to Start; Control Panel; Add or Remove Programs;
click on Antivir and click on "change"
Select "Change program" and click next

    There are 4 choices:
select Antivir Guard and click next
This will install the necessary files.
Click finish, restart your computer and try Antivir

You should be able to activate your guard.
