Don't know if they'll let you do this, however even if they did you'd have to pay a BT fee (which are circa 3%) so not really much point.

    Hi,

I've never had a credit card before and really only want one to pay for the balance of my holiday in Italy next year (already paid deposit of £100 on debit card) also need to arrange flights, car hire and possibly one night in a hotel.

I didn't realise there were any benefits with credits cards - what are the main benefits of booking flights, car hire etc and provided I pay everything off am I guaranteed not pay any charges at all - sounds too good to be true !!!

To be honest the idea of having a credit card terrifies me - I'm a 'very cautious' kind of person but am coming around to the idea :D if only to book holidays etc.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

PS which card would be the best for me

  • I'm new to this site - joined this morning. After many years of working at it, we are lucky enough to be debt free, but this site has made me realise I am being very lazy about my finances. We have used Barclaycard Visa for about 15 years. We use it for everything (about £30000 per year) and always pay off the monthly balance. I always shop in Sainsbury's and use the Nectar points to buy Xmas drink. (how boring do I sound?!?!)
This seems like a great site but trouble is, I'm finding it a bit overwhelming and am not sure where to start. I think I (at least) need to change my credit card, not sure if anything else - stoozing (?) etc. Could someone point me in the right direction please?

I have just been sent some credit card cheques, with a promotional rate for 6 months and a charge of 3% to use each cheque. My credit card balance is approx £1300 with APR of about 15%. I am thinking about paying my credit card off with money from my overdraft, and then a day later writing myself a credit card cheque to put in my current account to clear the £1300 which will be on my overdraft, so I can get the promotional rate of 0% for 6 months on my credit card. Will only cost me 39 quid for the 3% fee.

Depends what you're looking to do really!

You're probably best having a look at the articles Martin has written and you can access them from the main page, via the tabs like Cards/Loans, Shopping/Spending, Utilities, etc. These give an idea of the main starting points in getting finances, utilities, banking, etc sorted. Then you can venture into the forum and delve into the threads for some more 'specialised' moneysaving.

If you've not done it already, sign up to Martin's weekly e-mail via the main page - it usually has some great ideas in it.

You say you spend a substantial amount on your credit card - if you're with Barclaycard, chances are you're earning nothing back - for starters you could have a look at this article

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cards/cashback-credit-cards

Most of the articles are as informative.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi to all.

Recently, my brother in law applied for a capital one credit card that he has now received. I have noticed that in the back of his credit card agreement, it states

    Total charge for credit:
At the time of the agreement is made, is £257.78
Comprising interest in the sum of: £257.78

I would be grateful if someone could explain to me what 'total charge for credit' is. Also, do you need to pay an annual sum to have a credit card and if so, how would I find out what my brother in law will be paying?
