Problems with Virgin Media

Hi there,

In 2007 I joined virgin media for telephone and broadband. In April 2009 I sent them a letter to say I was moving and that they needed to terminate my contract as of 22nd May. They did. They also told me to phone a few days after the 22nd to check the outstanding amount on my bill and to check when they would take the money out of my account. I did. They said £8.(plus a few pennies) will go out my account on the 4th June. My contract had always been the 4th of the month. Well the thing is they did not take it out on the 4th (when the money was in my account waiting for them to take it out), instead they attempted to take it out on the 19th June (when the money was not in my account). As such my bank is charging me £30 for a bounced direct debit and who knows what penalty charges, etc that virgin will give me. I am really angry with virgin regarding this matter, and as such cancelled my direct debit and sent a cheque to them for £8 (plus a few pennies). I have also asked them to refund me £30 for the bank charge. I have also asked them not to charge me any penalty charges, etc.

My question to you guys is has anything like this happened to you before and if so, how did you deal with it? What are my chances of Virgin sorting out this matter the way I wanted them to, i.e. paying my direct debit charge and not charging me any penalty charges, etc.

Your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards

so if they didn't take it out on the 4th, surely the money should still be there?, you cannot blame virgin for trying to take their money, albeit late.
  • Hairy G....if virign decides to change its mind when to take money out of my account, I need to be kept informed. Afterall, its my account. My contract stipulates the 4th - not the 19th. I did the courteous thing of confirming the amount and day/date of when they intended to take the money out of account (by phoning them). As far as I am concerned, it should have gone out on the 4th and that was that. In the meantime my bank account is used to pay other suppliers, so when I know when a direct debit is due I check the balance and ensure that the direct debit can be met.

If there are any other moneyexperts users out there, please could you let me know if I have any legal advice/ consumer rights for this problem.

    Many thanx
