What is a "starter home"

In your opinion, what classes as a starter home?
Seems on another thread I'm the only one who thinks a 1 bed flat / bedsit type place is not a starter home.
My opinion of a starter home is a 1-2 bed house. I personally would never buy a flat, but a 2 bed flat also would class as a starter home. Somewhere where you can live with a partner, and think about starting a family.
I would like to know others opinions, and have put a poll up, as seems I'm wrong in my thoughts and can't quite get my head around how anyone can see a 1 bed flat / bedsit as a starter home.

Whatever you can afford really.
My idea of a starter home was a 2 bed flat, as I could afford it and I could make the 2nd bedroom my "office".This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Other - Explained.1 person. An acomodation one person can live in and afford.
couple.. An accomodation 2 people can live in and afford.
It is fairly simple in my eyes. If you ar planning a kid as a couple you can get away with 2 bed rooms.0 -

surely you should of asked for a single person.
Your average FTB is a couple0 -

agree with this - it's what suits your affordability and requirements.
but it all depends on who the starter home is for - a single man, single parent familiy or a couple.0 -

No, I'm not classing anything as single / couple.
I'm just asking what a starter home is classed as in your opinion. There is no single / couple equation on it. Remember, buying singally doesn't mean you want to always live singally....so a 1 bed flat would not let you "start" in my opinion, which is why i don't class them as "starter" homes.
I don't see "starters homes" as different for a single person buying or a couple buying. A single person is not neccesarily single, just buying the place themselves, which is why i didnt even think about the couple thing.
But theres no aim to divide on the starter home here in terms of couple or not.
Also, by starter home I mean FTB buying their first house ever. Not a FTB who's just been out of the market 6 months.
Hope that clears up what my intention was.0 -

1 bed flat / Bedsit i.e. small flat.A starter home is something small and affordable, the idea being that you upsize as you get older.
Its part of the great big ponzi scheme that is HPI.0 -

By that definition pretty much everything is a ponzi scheme!
If I start buying better branded clothes is that a ponzi scheme?
If I upgrade my car is that a ponzi scheme? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
