Is it worthless to sign up for sky+HD if you have normal TV (not "HD ready" TV)

Thank you all for your reply.

To norbet >> as I explained above, I got a good deal and cheaper than getting normal sky+ box. I wanna get big screen too but my living room is a bit small. Is it much better for HD comepare with a normal one. I cannot wait to watch it :)
OK your reasons seem sound enough, if it's the best deal about then there's no reason not to. Others have mentioned they couldn't see the difference between standard and HD tv, I can and I think it's worth the extra cost, others are less concerned with picture quality and therefore not bothered. Might be worth a trip to a local tv retailer that can demonstrate the difference for you before you commit to buying.
As for the confusion over feed signals - the Sky HD box outputs to various outputs that you can connect your TV to (SCART/HDMI and RF) HDMI is the only one that provides a HD feed to your TV and if you don't have a HD TV it can still be connected via SCART or RF.
If you connect a HD box to a HD TV by SCART only you'll only get a standard definition picture - hope that makes sense.

I am new customer. I will need home landline to be able to get broadband internet(I do not like mobile broadband). After working out, "sign up for sky+HD" is the best deal and cheapest deal. So why not go for it, right? I got free phone line rental+£60 cash back from Quidco+Free month HD rental+only £49 HD box.

At the end, I am paying £26something a month for first 12 motnhs which is the same price as getting BT line+o2 broad band(without TV).

That's why I am thinking to get new HD ready TV if it's useless to view HD with normal TV

You realise BT or Sky Line rental is ON TOP of that, so add £10 or more for line rental whcih takes it to £36+ a month. 2meg broadband has a limit of 2GB a month downloading too.

There are other providers that do phone and broadband cheaply, Tiscali (who have lousy customer support!) so phone line and 8mb broadband for £15.

I have just got Sky + HD box. I have a 32" inch HD Samsung. I love it! We watch a lot of sport, films and nature programmes, really notice the difference! And Sky +...how did I manage without it! :D

Just to clarify... HD Ready is a european standard and just means that the TV will display 720p AND 1080i, not as previously stated only 720p.

True HD only means it will definitely show a 1080p picture, but there are no guarantees that it will show the lesser formats.

Make doubly sure and get one that is HD Ready AND True HD if you want to keep an eye out on future specs.

Sky+ HD outputs 1080i, so the extra cost for 1080p (if there is one) is not necessary for Sky+HD alone...)

Also, if you're going to a shop to buy... make SURE that you check how TV's are connected that are side by side (yes, certain electrical retailers HAVE been known to use a SCART on one TV and HDMI on the one to the side of it... the HDMI one being more lucrative to the shops sales figures, but not necessarily a better TV)

Richersounds are expensive for TV's IMHO, but shop around.

Also, ignore all the "gold plated cables" sales pitch / garbage. It's horse manure unless you are a REAL AV-ophile, in which case you'd have HD already, most of the expensive cables available are not up to the latest HDMI standard anyways, ie HDMI v1.3 :)

The Sky box will come with ALL cables required including an HDMI cable which is perfectly suitable for use.

    Hope that helps :)

According to this thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1742717 the line rental is included (subject to where you live).
Not sure if the offer is still on though.

Looking at it the SkyTalk Freetime package is free but it's still £10 line rental
It may have been a limited time offer, but even that thread says line rental is £10 a month to Sky on top.

    Edit:
Actuially it is not clear one way or another if you pay line rental and to who...

Sky line rental increases to £11 a month from 1/9/09. Its not included but they may offer it to you free for a while,or half price for 6 months.

I got Free phone Line rental. This offer was for new customer who take Sky+ HD. I am not sure if this offer is still on. For the first 12 months, I will only pay Sky TV package (about £16)+ "Sky+ HD" rental (about £10)+Free phone line rental. So it's about £26 a month. I think I will get o2 broadband later on (it's cheaper on offer and better). Have not decided yet which TV I will go for. Now Sky+ TV is installed already to my SD TV.
