£2800 car bought £1000 of repairs in 6 weeks

All,

I bought from a dealer who claimed to have a warranty. The car was using excessive oil so my local garage said it was head gasket at £480. It was also drinking water so hoped that would stop that.

Then I discovered it was still leaking water that was due to a cracked thermostat, costing £80 to repair.

The last amount was the MOT today, costing £450 because of emissions and the cat convertor having issues.

The last issue was probably normal failure, but believe the vehicle was sold on to me with the first two issues being known. I have something in regards to a 6 month warranty, presumbly it will say they should have done the repairs, but the fact they missed all these items off when selling it worries me.

Anyone have an advice to help much appreciated!

  • Did you give the dealer the opportunity to repair the faults, before you went elsewhere?

    I don't understand ???
If you bought a car with warranty and it developed problems why did you not take it back to the dealer for repair ??????
It's not just about the money

Because when it broke down it was too far from where I bought it from. My mother has a disability and I needed her to have the car again as quickly as possible

Ok I understand that but did you ring the dealer and tell them it was broken down ?
I don't understand how using excessive oil is broken down ? if it was driveable it should have been taken back if it wasn't driveable you should have rung them to collect the car. it is highly likely they would have provided another car for use whilst it was being repaired. I'm sure if the car was being used for disability they would also have gone the extra mile.
Were you given any paperwork about the warranty with the car ?

I'd have still made it the dealers problem. They may well have lent you a car for example.

Also, especially given your family circumstances, its worth spending the £40 a year on AA / RAC cover - they'd have got the car to the dealer for you for free.

Cant believe you spent £600 of your hard earned when you didnt have to.

Please get rid of this as soon as poss i had a similar situation a few years back on a £5000 car, after being told gasket etc and paying for it even though it was on a so called warranty it ended up with cat con being changed and the engine man light having to be turned off on a few occasions. Turned out after a few months it was eating oil because 2 of the pistons had gone in the engine, it was cheaper to replace than replair. They'll fob you off until the warranty runs out.
I must have spent 2000 on repairing that bloomin car. He was a dodgy dealer and got closed down eventually but we never saw any money back etc.
Get whoever you can involved CAB etc as it will only get worse it all sounds too familiar to me.

Whilst your experience has been very bad, you / we dont know anything about the supplying dealer to know if thats the case here. Also, 'getting rid' will result in adding significantly to the £600 unnecessary loss so far.

    Car breaks down
O/P takes it upon himself to pay for repairs without going to supplying dealer

Why would you involve citizens advice?
  • if you didnt give the dealer a chance to fix it what can he be guilty of?

Cars go wrong, its a fact of life

Its not the dealers fault you were too far away
