Error 1402

I have tried to uninstall office 200 so that i can install office 2007 for which i have a valid cd.

When I try to do this the following comes up in a box;

Error 1402 could not open
HK_LOCAL_ MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Current Version\
Explorer\Shell Folders
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key,
or contact support personel.

I have also tried to install office 2007 , tickeing the box that says ''remove all previous versions''
and got exactly the same message.

I am the only person who uses the computer and i don't know what is going on.
Now after all my efforts to change to office 2007 - office 200 won't work at all but won't uninstal either.

HELP - HELP - HELP - PLEASE
N.B. I REALLY DO NEED TO GET RID OF OFFICE 2000-.
After ,with some help from you kind people at Techie Stuff, I have got rid of Office 2000 I want to be able to install Office 2007 and at the same time try out Open Office 3 - to find out what Ireally like as I am new to all this and want to give both a fair trial.

Thanks in advance.

This article may provide a solution.
  • Tried what the article suggested, (at least what I understood), and when I tried again it just came up with an error message about another registry key.

What can I do that is relatively simple as I am not an expert.

You have something whether it's Webroot Spysweeper, or maybe Spybot Search & Destroy - Tea Timer protecting your registry, do you happen to get an annoying popup telling you that something\someone is trying to alter your registry when you're installing programs? Or do you just get 'this account does not have sufficient permissions'?

Also with regards to comparing MS Office vs Open Office it's already been done for you here: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=open+office+vs+microsoft+office&search_type=&aq=9&oq=open+office it's also worth pointing out that as the Open Office guys tell it on their forums, the ONLY difference between the two is the facility to work with (that means OPEN) .wd documents or Word Documents and that's only because Microsoft keep making it unecessarily more difficult.

You will be able to learn more watching the youtube videos I'm sure.

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

Unless you just use either package for simple letters and documents then that statement that statement is quite far from the truth.

That's useful to know, thanks. You may want to go visit the Open Office Forums and tell them, as that's what they advised me.

  • Thanks to ABH I have got rid of office 2000 but cannot put in office 2007 - error 1402 again with different reg keys quoted - any other suggestions.

I want to install office 2007 - thanks for the suggestions about the Open Office forums - I appreciate your help - but I DO like to test for myself and want to put in both office systems for that purpose - A friend has given me a disk with Open Office's latest version on so I will try that as well.

I have an idea, close everything in your system tray, that's the little thing on the right side of the screen, everything but your antivirus and your firewall, leave those open and running. Simply right click on each, select Exit say Yes. Then stick the installer disk in your drive, and follow the installer instructions.

My usual method of handling something like this would be to run ccleaner and get it to clean the registry, that way everything should at least me in order in that regard. You also have the ability to remove faulty\corrupt registry entries. However, you have to be careful with it as it removes things like cookies some of which you may use to automatically log into certain websites etc. So providing you're comfortble with the various settings, install update and run and see what's left. Heres a tutorial about CCleaner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzBMzVd0H90 you could then try the installer again, or like I said right click exit everything in the system tray and run your installation disk again.

I don't think ccleaner should be constantly suggested on these forums as a "cure all problems", it does not sure all problems. In fact, it shouldn't be suggested at all in my opinion, as f**king about with your registry when you haven't a clue what your doing is a damn silly thing to be doing.
How many people kill their PC's doing this based on suggestions on these forums? We'll never know, because they don't have a PC anymore! just an expensive foot rest thanks to some bad advice!

OP are you using Windows Vista or XP? and what version? please

If it's XP you may need to turn off DEP
If it's Vista you may need a full admin account and turn off DEP

Turn off your antivirus and firewall temporarily to ensure no interference from those, Norton and AVG are sods for holding up installations and MS installations are ever increasingly trying to access the internet to establish whether they are genuine or not.
Any other programs running shouldn't matter unless they are also some form of security.
