Right now - no-one broadcasts in HD in the UK
( that's why the TV's are HD ready - ready when someone does. )
Sky will be launching an HD service later in the year - but only about 5 channels.
Industry analysts predict 2012 as when HD broadcasts the norm
The world cup may be broadcast in HD to Japan - but not definate yet.
If you really really need to buy a new telly - then get an HD ready one.
If you don't need a new telly - hang fire - they will just get cheaper and cheaper.
There are a few internet sites that broadcast stuff in HD - but unless you have a huge broadband connection - you will need to download to your PC - save it and then play it.
Cheers

To receive HD broadcasts you are going to need a special receiver. At the moment the only one available is the Sky HD box. It is possible in the future that there will be a Freeview HD box but I haven't seen any definite information. I believe BBC have committed to going to HD in the next couple of years so I would expect a Freeview option.
A word of caution: because of the ongoing ding-dong regarding DRM on the new-gen DVD formats (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray) it is very possible that any HD TV bought now will be severely crippled when it comes to playing HD DVDs. The reason for this is that the DVD producers want the content unscrambling to happen actually in the TV itself in order to minimise piracy. You will still be able to get an analogue signal to your HD TV but the resolution will be crippled to around a quarter of the resolution of which your TV is actually capable (480 instead of 1920 pixels). TVs are not yet capable of decoding the scrambled signal because the manufacturers have yet to decide on the precise format. This, coupled with the ongoing format war means I am going to wait a couple of years before going over to HD.

You are right - I found 3 channels. :j 2 movies 1 sport.
Although the Sky website doesn't load to tell me how much it will cost to upgrade....hmmm.
I wouldn't really buy a £1200 telly on the back of 3 channels.
If the OP needs a new telly - then an HD ready one is the one to get.
Best

ps. Sky website eventually responds.... yawn
Around 10 channels.0 -
I WAS LED TO BELIEVE THAT THE BBC ARE GOING TO BROADCAST THE WORLD CUP IN hd..0

It seems the Germans finally decided to record in HD.
BBC are doing a trial broadcast..
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4834322.stm
"The trial run of the service will include the BBC's share of World Cup matches and key Wimbledon ties in June.
The corporation is trying out HDTV for up to a year, starting in mid-May."
"Mr Mosey stressed that the trial would only be available to a selected group of viewers, but hoped it would prove to be "a glimpse of the future". "
"HDTV transmissions cannot be offered on Freeview at present due to limited airspace, while a trial limited to a few hundred households in London which have yet to be chosen will take place."

Apparantly the SKY HD set top box is going to be around £300 and there will be a monthly subscription charge as well, not sure if the charge is for SKY+ as I have seen pictures of a HD SKY+ box.
I have a Dell LCD high def ready TV but won't be in any hurry to subscribe to the service as it is not worth it at the moment with only minimal channels availaible0 -

.
Actually Telewest started there HD broadcast last month they were the first to launch HD in the UK.
One of my tasks at work is to make sure that HD content is available for broadcast.
trials will start soon for BBC HD in time for the world cup.0 -
All of the Sky HD boxes have Sky+ functionality. There will be a £10 charge per month for HD on top of the standard £10 charge for Sky+ which is waived if you have 2 or more premium channels.slowen wrote:Apparantly the SKY HD set top box is going to be around £300 and there will be a monthly subscription charge as well, not sure if the charge is for SKY+ as I have seen pictures of a HD SKY+ box.
You could always buy a FTA HD receiver for the BBC transmissions, and the many other European HD satellite broadcasts...0
